NEW YORK - After a month away from competition, the Manhattan College men's and women's indoor track & field teams was back in action at the NYC Gotham Cup from the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center on Friday.  Several Jaspers posted qualifying marks for both the Metropolitan and ECAC/IC4A Championships, led by Colin Quirke's (Los Gatos, Calif.) first-place finish in the men's shot put.

With a winning effort of 16.32 meters (53 feet, 6½ inches), Quirke bettered the qualifying standard for both Mets and IC4As.  Manhattan claimed three of the first five places in the shot put, with Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuaning) taking fourth (15.38 m, 50'5½) and Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) finishing fifth (15.22 m, 49'11¼).  Ewald also placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 16.74 m (54'11¼).  In the men's pole vault, Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) was the top collegian (and tied for third overall) with a clearance at 4.65 m (15'3).  Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden) qualified for Mets in the long jump (6.54 m, 21'5½).

On the track, Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) ran the 800 meters in 1:54.82, meeting the qualifying standard for the IC4A Championships by .08 seconds.  Others posting Met-qualifying times on Friday were Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) in the 60 meters (7.09) and Carlos Petrovich (Yonkers, N.Y.) in the 500 meters (1:06.13).

Among the Manhattan women, Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) both qualified for the Metropolitan Championships in the mile.  Jangsten finished sixth in a time of 5:16.60, while Cappello was seventh in 5:18.43.  In the women's 500 meters, Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) crossed the line in 1:17.12, good enough for sixth place.

Making her Manhattan debut, Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) achieved the Met-qualifying standard in the long jump (5.08 m, 16'8).  In addition, Karolin Wagner (Ribbesbuettel, Germany) took third place in the pole vault with a leap of 3.45 m (11'3¾).

The Jaspers have one meet remaining before the Metropolitan Championships.  Manhattan returns to the Armory Track & Field Center for the Albany Great Dane Classic next Friday, with competition getting underway at 12:30 p.m.
