ITHACA, N.Y. -- Following up on a strong start to the season back in December, the Cornell men returned from the winter holiday with strong performances at the Southern Tier Collegiate Open on Friday night in Barton Hall.  The Big Red men had eight event wins to go along with eight IC4A qualifiers, a school record and a slew of alterations to the school all-time top 10 lists.

Freshman Stephen Mozia reached No. 2 all-time in Cornell's storied throwing history with the third-best shot put in the nation this season, reaching 59' 1/4". Mozia now sits only behind legendary Dave Doupe in the school and freshman record books.  Also bettering the IC4A standard was senior co-captain Bob Belden, who threw 55' 7" after earlier winning the weight throw at 52' 4 3/4".

The Big Red men also had a school record, as the team's deep contingent of multi-eventers contested the pentathlon.  Senior Nick Huber scored 3,707 points behind an 8.38 60 hurdles, a 21' 4" long jump, a 6' 0" clearance in the high jump, a 44' 4 1/4" shot put and a 2:49.58 run in the 1000.  Freshman Jon Hanninen reached No. 4 all-time with a score of 3,572 while senior Chris Ryan moved to No. 7 all-time with a total of 3,411.

There were several other very strong showings in the field. Sophomore Tommy Butler and senior Chris Arlinghaus both cleared 6' 9 3/4" to better the IC4A standard in the high jump, with Butler moving to No. 10 all-time at Cornell. In the triple jump, sophomore Steven Bell won with a mark of 47' 4 1/2" while classmate Dan Scott reached 46' 11". Both were IC4A qualifiers.  Fellow sophomore Hercules Stancil won the long jump at 22' 7 1/4".

On the track, senior co-captain Dan Hagberg ran 8.16 to dip under the IC4A standard in a first-place performance in the 60 hurdles. Freshman Rutger Admirand won the 500 with an IC4A-qualifying 1:04.90. Classmate Hong Cho was second at 1:06.68. Senior Brian Freitas claimed the 800 in 1:59.05. A trio of sophomores were second in their events:  Max Groves (4:29.55 in the mile), Andre Anderson (51.20 in the 400) and Chris Bain (22.64 in the 200).

Next up for Cornell is the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge on Saturday, January 14.
