ITHACA, N.Y. -- Staying competitive at the top of the Ivy League is always a challenge, but it is a challenge the 2012 Big Red men's track and field team is eager to meet.

On the heels of being selected as the top program in the Northeast for the ninth consecutive year, the team returns a number of Heps Champions and the largest contingent of IC4A qualifiers in Cornell history. Great team balance and depth has become a hallmark of the Cornell teams, and this year will not be an exception to that rule.

JUMPS/DECATHLON
Lead by team Captain and Decathlon All-American Nick Huber, the team returns All-Ivy jumpers Steven Bell , Chase Aaronson, Dan Scott, Hercules Stancil and Chris Arlinghaus, all of whom should be Heps scorers and qualify for the NCAA Championships. Joining them are super-talented high jumpers Montez Blair and Tom Butler. The vault will be led by sophomores Peter Roach and David Kim. In the multi-events, Huber and Heps scorers Josh Cusick, Vince Formica, Chris Ryan and Mike Rabbitt along with freshman All-American Nick Athanasopoulos should be dominant.

SPRINTS/HURDLES
Heps Champions and school record holders abound for Cornell in these events with team captain Dan Hagberg leading the way. Huber was the runner up in the high hurdles and joins Heps champ Brian Freitas in the 400 hurdles. Current 500-meter record holder Dan Thomas and former record holder Kenny McClain are stars in the league and beyond as all four qualified for the NCAAs last year. Challenging them will be freshman Cisco Olloqui in the 400. In the shorter sprints, two-time Heps champ Bruno Hortelano is joined by runner-up Aaronson and Heps 60-meter Champ Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom. Also in the mix with the potential to be the top runners are Chris Bain and Kinsley Ojukwu, who already stand among the top 10 sprinters ever in the Ivy League.

MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
Junior Heps champ, NCAA qualifier and school record holder Nick Wade leads a very talented mid-distance squad that includes Heps scorers Will Weinlandt and John Schilkowski. Added to this group are freshmen All-Americas Hong Cho and Rutger Admirand. This group could have a major impact on the national scene. Andy Arnold is the top returning miler along with Brett Kelly, Gabe Heck and Kevin Johnson in the distance events. The depth in the distance events is exceptional with eight returning IC4A qualifiers in the 10K alone.

THROWS
Not to be outdone by the other event groups, the throws are led by all-time great, captain Bob Belden who has qualified for the NCAAs each of his first three years in the shot and discus. Joining him this year will be freshman All-America Stephen Mozia, who will open a lot of eyes, and Jesse Braun. Both could score a lot of points when it counts. Bob Fiedler looks to have a breakthrough year in the hammer with the freshmen hotly in pursuit.

All told, the 2011-12 season could potentially be a championship kind of year. But only time will tell as Princeton also has an excellent squad and the two heavyweights should battle it out for the coveted Heps title.
