New York State Public High School State Championship Preview: Girls

Below are our top teams to watch, who could challenge them, and top individuals.

Speed Ratings are provided by Bill Meylan of TullyRunners.com

Class A

Team: Fayetteville-Manlius

Challengers:  The question isn't who will win, but by how much will F-M win.  The projections have changed recently, as #2 Christie Rutledge and #5 Heather Martin, but their depth will save them.  Saratoga Springs, longtime New York powerhouse as well, will be relatively unchallenged for the second spot.  Canandaigua taking third, another national power, shows truly just how deep NYS girls cross country really is.

Section 1 North Rockland
Section 2 Saratoga Springs
Section 3 Fayetteville-Manlius
Section 4 Ithaca
Section 5 Canandaigua
Section 6 Clarence
Section 8 Massapequa
Section 9 Monroe-Woodbury
Section 11 Ward Melville

Laura Leff West Genesee
Rachel Paul Sachem East
Lizzie Predmore Shenendehowa
Katie Sischo Fayetteville-Manlius
Gianna Frontera Newburgh Free Academy
Taylor Driscoll Saratoga Springs
Annika Avery Fayetteville-Manlius
Meghan McCormick Canandaigua
Katie Lembo Penfield
West Genesee's Laura Leff

Breakdown: Jillian Fanning is the favorite to win, but Laura Leff might have something to say about that.  Leff recently told us that she had much more left in the tank after a close battle with Fanning at the Section 3 qualifier. Rachel Paul, Lizzie Predmore, Katie Sischo, and Gianna Frontera all have had great seasons in their own right, most with a very impressive wins-loss ratio.

Class B

Team

Favorite: North Shore

Challenger: Burnt Hills-Balston Lake looks to give North Shore a scare.  The race completely rests on how well North Shore's 5th girl can run.  It's clear they have 4 of the top runners in the class, but there are a lot of spots separating #4 and number #5, which can put a lot of extra numbers on North Shore overall score.  How many girls Burnt-Hills can fit in that space will determine the outcome.

Section 1 Pearl River
Section 2 Burnt Hills-Balston Lake
Section 3 Westhill-Ludden
Section 4 Johnson City
Section 5 Honeoye Falls-Lima
Section 6 East Aurora
Section 7 Peru
Section 8 North Shore
Section 9 Cornwall
Section 10 Canton
Section 11 Bayport-Blue Point
Honoeye Falls-Lima

Samantha Nadel North Shore
Brianna Nerud North Shore
Lauren Mullins Johnson City
Jessica Donohue North Shore
Elizabeth Caldwell North Shore
Leah Triller Holy Names
Stephanie Gerland Garden City
Arianna Bottalico Brewster
Molly Shine Pearl River
Talia Guevara Miller Place
North Shore's top 2

Breakdown: Glancing at the list, its readily apparent how deep Section 8 is.  Beyond the four North Shore girls, it is important to note Garden City's up and coming 8th grader Stephanie Gerland as a newcomer to the mix.  Lauren Mullins is always a contender and national qualifier, and it will be up to her to split up the North Shore four.

Class C

Team

Favorite: Bronxville

Challenger: The battle between Section 1 Bronxville and Section 2 Greenwich is going to be fierce.  Both teams strike a strong 1-2 punch with their girls running fast times all year.  Bronxville gets the edge over a favored Greenwich simply based on history; Greenwich was also favored over Bronxville last year, with Bronxville ultimately pulling the upset to win the race.  Needless to say, this looks to be the closest girls race of the day.

Section 1 Bronxville
Section 2 Greenwich
Section 3 Tully
Section 4 Newark Valley
Section 5 Wayland Cohocton
Section 6 Fredonia
Section 7 Saranac
Section 8 Friends Academy
Section 9 Tri-Valley
Section 10 Ogdensburg
Section 11 Center Moriches
Greenwich

Mary Cain Bronxville
Kelsey Margey Friends Academy
Victoria Houser Greenwich
Alicia Clark Granville
Meredith Rizzo Bronxville
Maddie Zeitz Windsor
Madeline Montague Greenwich
Lauren Reyda Fredonia
Natalie Tanner Rye Neck
Victoria Campanian South Lewis
Mary Cain

Breakdown: There are a lot of good stories to look into considering this race.  The first is how fast will Mary run now that she has strong competition with Friend's Academy's Kelsey Margey close behind her.  Cain has run most meets uncontested this year, and the extra pressure could produce a good time.  Next, will Greenwich's Victoria Houser and Madeline Montague be able to close ranks on Bronxville's Meredith Rizzo.  With both runners getting ahead of Rizzo, it could possible win Greenwich the meet.  But Rizzo is not to be underestimated, a great runner in her own right.  Look for a battle out on the course.

Class D

Team

Favorite: Maple Grove

Challengers: Maple Grove has a distinct lead over the rest of the pack, but second place is a close matchup between Beaver River and Geneseo.  Both teams have had strong years, and it will be a close race to the finish.

Section 1 Alexander Hamilton
Section 2 Berne-Knox-Westerlo
Section 3 Beaver River
Section 4 Delhi
Section 5 Geneseo
Section 6 Maple Grove
Section 7 Seton Catholic
Section 9 John A. Coleman
Section 10 Norwood-Norfolk
Section 11 Southold
Beaver River
