POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 29, 2011) – On a snowy afternoon at the Vassar Farm, St. Lawrence University earned its 17th consecutive Liberty League Men's Cross Country Championship with 29 points. Host Vassar College finished second (64 points), followed by RPI in third (73), Clarkson in fourth (96), RIT in fifth (103), Union in sixth (184), Hobart in seventh (224) and Bard in eighth (245).

John Johnson of St. Lawrence won the individual race in 25:50, besting 118 finishers. He was followed closely by Alex Benway of Clarkson in 26:01. St. Lawrence won handily, placing five runners within the top-10.

The Brewers were able to accomplish their dual goals of repeating as the League's second place finisher and breaking up St. Lawrence at the top. The Brewers equaled St. Lawrence with two top-five runners as Sam Wagner (26:29) and Zach Williams (26:30) finished fourth and fifth respectively, earning All-Liberty League honors in the process. “Sam Wagner and Zach Williams did a great job moving through the race despite the blinding snow, and turned out some of their best races of the season,” explained head coach James McCowan.

All runners and even the timing system were affected by the blizzard-like conditions throughout the entirety of the race, and the official results were delayed. McCowan noted, “We had multiple runners go down during the race, which significantly impacted our team performance.” He continued, “Justin Rupert fell and was injured, unable to finish, and several other guys had their times slowed by the slippery conditions.”

Despite the dreadful conditions, Vassar slipped in just enough runners ahead of RPI to maintain the second place slot. Behind Wagner and Williams, Will Healy (26:56) finished 13th, Eliot Gerson (27:19) finished in 19th place and Roni Teich sealed the runner-up position in 26th place (27:34). Healy's result earned him a spot on the All-Liberty League Second Team. Charles Wise (28:40) and Sean Majer (28:45) stepped up to finish sixth and seventh for the Brewers and 48th and 51st overall, respectively.

Wagner was thrilled with his team's performance, “It was a great day for Vassar,” He said. “We've been waiting to run to our full potential and we finally did.”

The Brewers will hope to build upon this weekend's performance on November 12 at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Race, hosted by St. Lawrence. Noted McCowan, “With Justin (Rupert) back healthy, and strong runs from the whole team at Regionals, we will be in contention for one of the top spots in the region.”
