Liberty League Honors Four Athletes From Two Programs

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 17, 2011) – The Liberty League bestowed honors upon four Vassar College athletes as Ben Guzick and Andrew Guzick of men's tennis, and Kelly Holmes and Harper Cleves of women's cross country won weekly awards.

BEN GUZICK, AND ANDREW GUZICK, MEN'S TENNIS, LIBERTY LEAGUE CO-PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

Ben Guzick
Brothers Ben and Andrew Guzick finished in 6th place at the ITA National Small Championships in Mobile, Alabama. The Guzick brothers knocked off Amrik Donkena and Mya Smith-Dennis of Gustavus Adolphus 6-1, 0-6, 10-7 in the consolation match but fell 6-4, 6-2 to Max Frey and Erick DelaFuente of Trinity University (TX) in the fifth place match. They will earn All-America status.

This is Ben Guzick's first weekly award this season and his sixth overall. He has earned Liberty League All-Conference Singles and Doubles honors the past two seasons.

A 2008 graduate of the Harley School, Ben Guzick was a six-year letter winner and led his team to a No. 7 national ranking in his senior year. He won the New York State high school doubles championship as a junior and was named All-State as well as district player of the year. A four-year Finger Lakes All-League member, he was named a top 150 recruit in the class of 2008 by tennisrecruiting.net. He transferred to Vassar from Carleton College where he was ranked No. 5 in the Central Region and No. 18 nationally in the ITA preseason rankings as a sophomore.

Andrew Guzick
This is Andrew Guzick's eleventh career Liberty League Performer of the Week award. Last Spring, he earned ITA All-America honors and became the program's first player to reach the quarterfinals of the singles competition of the NCAA Division III Championships. A former Liberty League Rookie of the Year, he won the ITA Northeast Regional Championship and recorded the program's first singles win at the National Small College Championships last Fall.

A 2009 graduate of the Harley School, Andrew Guzick was a five-year letter winner in tennis. He was named Finger Lakes All-League his sophomore through senior year and selected to the All Greater Rochester team as a junior and senior. At Harley, his team was ranked No. 10 in the nation his senior year and No. 7 his junior year.

KELLY HOLMES, JUNIOR, WOMEN'S XC, LIBERTY LEAGUE CO-PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

Holmes led Vassar to its second straight Seven Sisters Championship, making Vassar the first team to accomplish the feat since 2002. Holmes led Vassar across the tape with a 19:04.90 time in the race with 102 participants. Over the last 300 meters of the race, Holmes closed the gap on Wellesley's Leah Clement to within 50 meters, and was just barely edged at the finish line by five-tenths of a second with Clement's 19:04.46 time. Holmes was named All Seven Sisters.

A 2009 graduate of Ridgefield High School, Holmes earned four letters in cross country. She was named All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) her junior year, and Second-Team All-FCIAC her sophomore and senior years. Holmes' high school team won FCIAC Championships twice, and was Connecticut class LL runner-up in 2006.

HARPER CLEVES, FRESHMAN, WOMEN'S XC, LIBERTY LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Cleves was an 8th place overall finisher in the annual Seven Sisters 5k Championship, won by Vassar for the second straight year. Named to the All-Seven Sisters Team, Cleves finished the race in 19:47. She was the first freshman finisher in the race.

Cleves lettered all four years in cross country and track at Rancho Buena Vista High School for head coach Tom Lux. She was named All-League three years, All-CIF two years, and All-Academic CIF as a junior and senior. She helped her team qualify for California State Championship three times. She ran on a school-record setting 4x800m Relay as a senior and ran personal bests in the 1600m Run (5:13) and 3200m Run (11:35) as a junior.
