PRINCETON, N.J. – The Cornell men's cross country team won the Princeton Invitational on Saturday morning, besting 13 other teams with a meet-low 50 points.

The Big Red's five scoring runners averaged a time of 25:10, narrowly beating second-place Princeton's average of 25:12. But where it counted most, in the points, Cornell bested Princeton by 18.

Sophomore Max Groves led the way for Cornell, finishing the course in fourth place overall in 25:04. Junior Brett Kelly was only four seconds behind him for ninth place overall, and junior Kevin Johnson took 10th place in 25:10.

Rounding out Cornell's top scoring five runners was Matt McCullough and Chandler Kemp, who finished four seconds apart at 25:11 and 25:15. McCullough took 11th place as an individual and Kemp placed 16th.

The meet at Princeton was an important one because it allowed Cornell to see the course where the Heptagonal Championships will be run in two weeks.

While the team's top seven runners went to Princeton, the rest of the squad traveled to the University of Rochester for the Yellowjacket Invitational. There, Cornell (59) placed third behind Rochester (42) and Western Ontario (54).

The Big Red's average time of 26:57 was just 14 seconds slower than Rochester's average.

Sophomore David Forward was the best runner for Cornell in Rochester, finishing in 26:31 for a fifth place individual mark. Forward was followed closely by sophomore Christopher Christoff (ninth) and freshman David Melly (10th), who finished four seconds apart.

Also scoring for Cornell was sophomore Andrew Herring (16th) and freshman Kieran Kinnare (19th).

The Big Red hosts its final home meet of the season on Friday, the Reif Memorial Run, in the afternoon. One week later, Cornell will compete for a Heps title in Princeton.
