Women's Results    Men's Results

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell cross country teams competed very well on the challenging Harry Lang Cross Country course at Colgate on Saturday, placing second to nationally ranked Syracuse in both the men's and women's races but beating the host Raiders in Hamilton. Running under cloudy skies with ideal upper-50 degree temperatures but on a muddy and hilly course, both Big Red squads gave very good efforts.

On the men's side, Cornell's 36 points placed them second behind Syracuse's 29. Colgate finished with 72. Syracuse won the women's event with 21 points to Cornell's 38 and Colgate's 82.

The men were off first and did a terrific job giving No. 14 Syracuse all they could handle, nearly matching the Orange man for man in the scoring five. A pair of sophomores stepped up to lead the charge. For the second week in a row, the squad was led by Max Groves, who placed third overall in 25:26 for the 8K layout, the 10th-best performance ever run on this course. He was followed closely by classmate Gabriel Heck, who was sixth in 25:31.

Junior Brett Kelly continued his resurgence with an eighth-place run of 25:36. Senior captain Chandler Kemp was 10th in 25:41 and freshman Ben Potts closed out the scoring with a 15th-place finish of 25:51 as Cornell boasted a tight 25-second spread for the scoring five.

Rounding out the top seven was freshman David Mellly (24th, 26:27) and junior Andy Arnold (28th, 26:41). Also running well in the top 30 were freshman Tyler Eustance (29th, 26:53) and sophomore Christopher Christoff (30th, 26:57).

The Cornell women also had a very good showing, improving significantly from the same meet a year ago, both in their competitiveness against the No. 15 Orange and in their times and overall racing. Cornell was led for the second week in a row by junior Katie Kellner, who was third in 21:17, the fourth-best time ever on this 6K course and 38 seconds better than her time from 2010. Finishing right behind again was classmate Genna Hartung, who was fourth in 21:23, fifth all-time on the course and over a minute better than her time from last year.

Sophomore Emily Shearer continued her breakout season with an eighth-place finish in 21:48, a 77-second improvement from her freshman year. Freshman Marianne Collard ran very well in her first attempt at 6000 meters, placing 10th in 21:53 as Cornell's first four finishers were all faster than Cornell's top placer here in 2010. Senior Janel Parker closed out the scoring for the Big Red with a 14th-place finish in 22:13 despite battling illness all week.

Sophomore Devin McMahon had a fine race to place 15th in 22:20 while junior Kate Rosettie had a 70-second improvement to close out Cornell's top seven with a 17th-place run of 22:30.

Also finishing in the top 30 for Cornell was sophomore Rachel Sorna (24th, 22:52), freshman Sydney Williams (25th, 22:58), freshman Corey Dowe (26th, 22:59), junior Neesha Schnepf (28th, 23:04), senior Christine Smith (29th, 23:12) and senior captain Meghan Brown (30th, 23:13). In another good sign for the Big Red, the team's scoring five averaged 21:42 for the 6K course, which was 31 seconds faster than last year.

Next up for Cornell is the nationally competitive Paul Short Run at Lehigh University on Friday, September 30.
