Cornell To Induct 10 Into Athletic Hall of Fame

ITHACA, N.Y. – ITHACA, N.Y. -- Ten new members, including two All-Americans, have been selected for induction into the Cornell University Athletic Hall of Fame at the 35th annual ceremonies to be held November 11, on the Cornell campus. After this year's class is inducted, the membership in the Hall will stand at 532.

The All-Americans who will be inducted are Steve Baginski '80, men's track & field; and Patrick Dutton '99, men's lacrosse.

Also selected to be enshrined in November are Karen Chastain Hughes '01, women's track & field; Chris Mabley '65, lightweight rowing; Robin Moore '01, volleyball; Peter Orthwein '68, men's polo; Helen Barfield Prichett '95, women's swimming & diving; Joseph Splendorio '01, football; Dave Van Dyke '74, gymnastics; Molly Kauffman West '97, field hockey.

In addition to the formal induction ceremonies on Friday evening, the honorees will be recognized at halftime of the Cornell-Columbia football game on Saturday afternoon.

The Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame was initiated in 1978. It became a reality through the thoughtfulness and generosity of the late Ellis H. Robison '18, whose devotion, advice and financial support to his alma mater started immediately upon graduation from the university.

A brief biography of each of the 10 inductees follows.

Steve Baginski '80, Men's Track & Field
A specialist in the weight throw indoors and in the hammer throw outdoors, Baginski set the school record in the weight throw in 1979 with a distance of 64-7 1/4, currently second-best all-time at Cornell. He was a two-time All-American as selected by the U.S. Track & Field Federation on the basis of his sixth-place finish in the hammer throw at USTFF championships in 1977 and his second-place finish in the event in 1979. He qualified for NCAAs in the weight throw three straight years and was also a three-year qualifier in the hammer throw. Baginski placed eighth in the weight throw at the 1980 IC4As after placing sixth in the event in 1979. He was named the team's top weightman as both a junior and senior. Baginski was the recipient of the ECAC Merit Medal as Cornell's outstanding scholar-athlete in 1979.

Patrick Dutton '99, Men's Lacrosse
A two-year captain at midfield, he was a first-team All-Ivy selection in 1998 and 1999. In 1998, became the first Cornell midfielder since 1990 to earn USILA All-America honors. He was named team MVP as sophomore in 1997 and also received the Joe Philip Memorial Award, given annually to the player contributing most to the overall team effort. Following graduation in 1999, Dutton was invited to compete for the North team in the USILA's annual North/South Classic. He ended his career with 118 points. In football, Dutton played at the wide receiver position. In his second game of collegiate football, he had 11 catches for 111 yards. Dutton played for the New Jersey Pride and Rochester Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse, helping the Rattlers to the 2008 MLL Zip Championship. He also played for the National Lacrosse League's Rochester Knighthawks from 2005-07. In 2002, Dutton founded the Next Level lacrosse camp for boys and girls ages 8-18. He served as an assistant coach for the Big Red men's lacrosse team for the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

Karen Chastain Hughes '01, Women's Track & Field
Chastain Hughes was a three-time Heptagonal champion in discus (1999, 2000 and 2001) and was a four-time All-East and All-Ivy honoree. As of April 2011, her placement among the top 10 Cornell records is as follows: her discus throw of 163-11 in 2000 remains the second best throw in school history. She also currently ranks fifth in the indoor shot put (46-0 in 2000) and the outdoor shot put (45-5 3/4 in 2000); and sixth all-time in the hammer throw (170-0 in 2001). In the javelin, she currently ranks eighth in the new javelin throw (120-8 in 1999) and 10th place in the pre-1999 (123-3 in 1998). Chastain Hughes was a two-time co-captain (as a junior and senior).

Christopher Mabley '65, Lightweight Rowing
Mabley was a three-year letterman in lightweight crew (1963-64-65). He stroked the lightweight varsity crew to three straight Eastern Sprint titles, with the 1964 (4-0) and 1965 (4-0) crews going undefeated. The 1964 varsity was the first perfect season in Cornell lightweight history. The 1963 and 1965 varsity boats competed at the Henley Royal Regatta, with the 1965 boat losing in the semifinals of the Thames Challenge Cup. He was commodore of the lightweights as a senior.

Robin Moore '01, Volleyball
The 2000 Ivy League Player of the Year and Ivy tournament MVP, Moore was a two-time first-team All-Ivy selection (1999, 2000). She helped her team to a 20-9 record as a senior, the Big Red's first winning campaign in six seasons. Moore was winner of the Cornell Daily Sun Athlete of the Year and the Charles A. Moore Outstanding Senior award in 2001. Moore set the school's career record of 1,190 kills, which remains third all-time. Her 382 kills as a senior ranked third all-time and is now seventh. She also set a school record with 32 kills against Colgate in 1999, a mark that still ranks second all-time. Moore graduated with the season record for kills per game at 4.18, currently third all-time. She was a four-time letter winner.

Peter Orthwein '68, Men's Polo
Orthwein was a member of the men's polo team that won the national intercollegiate championship tournament in 1966 and finished runner-up for the national intercollegiate title in 1967 and 1968. He was captain of the 1967-68 team and won varsity letters in 1966, 1967 and 1968 and received his numerals as a freshman. Upon graduation, Orthwein played in the U.K., making it to the finals of the Royal Windsor Tournament, Queen's Cup and Gold Cup Tournaments. He founded the Airstream team, which produced a slew of world-class polo players. Orthwein achieved a five-goal USPA handicap rating, held by less than 5 percent of all polo players.

Helen Barfield Prichett '95, Women's Swimming & Diving
Barfield Prichett was a four-year letter winner who graduated with Cornell records in the 200, 500, 1000 and 1650 free and the 400 individual medley. She was named to the All-Ivy second team for her second-place performances in the 500 and the 1650 free at the Eastern championships in 1994. Barfield Prichett had three top five finishes at Easterns as a freshman (third in the 500 free, fourth in the 400 IM and 1650 free). She was team MVP as a freshman and sophomore and served as co-captain as a senior and tri-captain as a junior.

Joseph Splendorio '01, Football
Splendorio was voted to Cornell's All-Time Football Team by the Cornell Football Association in 2003. A three-time All-Ivy selection, he was named to the first team in 1999, second team in 1998 and honorable mention in 2000. He is the current Cornell record holder for most receiving yard in a game (204 yards on 11 catches at Brown in 1999, the first Cornellian to post a 200-yard receiving game) and for most career touchdown passes caught (20). Splendorio posted 2,337 receiving yards, currently second all-time at Cornell. He also had nine 100-yard games, which is second to Eric Krawczyk's record of 10. Splendorio graduated with a record of 165 receptions, which is currently third all-time. As a junior, he was the co-recipient of the Pop Warner Player of the Year team award (shared with Ricky Rahne '02) and took home the Stone Travel “Big Play” and Victor Grohmann awards for academic and athletic proficiency after catching 65 passes for 944 yards and 10 touchdowns. Splendorio was a two-time recipient of the Offensive Red Helmet award (1998 and 2000). A team co-captain in 2000, he was a three-time letter winner. Splendorio had four career blocked kicks, including fourth quarter blocks against Harvard in consecutive years to help the Big Red top the Crimson.

Dave VanDyke '74, Men's Gymnastics
VanDyke was the Ivy League gymnastics champion on the parallel bars in 1971 and 1973, the Ivy side horse champion in 1972, horizontal bars champion in 1972 and 1974, and the Ivy all-around champ in 1972, 1973 and 1974. He was second on the side horse and parallel bars in 1974. VanDyke set the Cornell record in the all-around in 1973. Cornell, which competed as a club team in Van Dyke's freshman year (1971-72), won the Ivy title all four years he competed; gymnastics became a varsity sport at Cornell in 1972-73; it was also the first year in which Cornell competed as a member of the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League. He was co-captain in 1973-74 and was co-team MVP in 1973 when he placed eighth in the all-around at the EIGL championships.

Molly Kauffman West '97, Field Hockey
In 1996, Kauffman West was selected as a first-team Mideast Regional All-America honoree as a goalkeeper and was chosen to play in the Senior North-South All-Star Game. She captured second-team All-Ivy honors. As a senior, Kauffman West compiled a .894 save percentage, which ranked second in the country, while allowing 1.55 goals per game. In her final regular season game against Yale, she made a school-record 43 saves, which remains unbroken. Currently she ranks second in saves in a season (235) and third in saves in a career (413). Kauffman West was selected team defensive MVP in 1995 and 1996. She was a three- year letter winner and served as co-captain in 1996.
