McGovern, Quirke Selected to Represent Ireland

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Sophomore Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) and junior Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) of the Manhattan College men's track & field team have both been selected to represent Ireland at an upcoming European Cup meet in Turkey.  McGovern will compete in the pole vault, while Quirke was chosen in the discus throw.

McGovern is the school and Irish national record-holder in the pole vault, having cleared 5.06 meters (16 feet, 7¼ inches) at last season's IC4A Outdoor Championships.  He's also the indoor school record holder (5.15 m, 16'10¾), which he set en route to a first-place finish at the 2010 IC4A Indoor Championships.

Quirke is No. 2 on Manhattan's all-time discus throw list.  His toss of 54.86 m (180'0) earned him the gold medal and Co-Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events honors at this season's MAAC Outdoor Championships.  Quirke also won the shot put (16.35 m, 53'7¾) at the MAAC Championships.  This weekend, he'll compete at the NCAA East Regional Championships in the discus throw.  Quirke's father, Paul, represented Ireland in the shot put at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

The European Cup is a two-day competition that will take place on June 18-19 in Izmir, Turkey.
