Erickson and Holmes Earn Liberty League Honors

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 23, 2011) – Following outstanding efforts at the ECAC Championships, senior Jon Erickson and sophomore Kelly Holmes of the Vassar College men's and women's track programs earned Liberty League Performer of the Week honors.

The senior qualified for the 2011 NCAA Track & Field Championships at Ohio Wesleyan by winning his 800 meter heat at the ECAC Outdoor Championships on Friday. Erickson, who won the second of three heats run with a 1:51.76 time, broke free from a tight pack at the 400 meter mark and used his powerful kick to win the race. His time placed him third overall out of 17 runners. This is his seventh career weekly award and his first Performer of the Week award in two years. Erickson graduated from DuPont Manual in 2007 where he was a two-year letter winner in track and cross country. He was Academic All-State in 2006 and 2007 named All Region in 2006 and 2007 All-State in 2007. Erickson holds the 800m record at DuPont Manual and was also a member of the record setting 4x800m relay team. During his junior year he was AAA Indoor State runner-up in the 800m and in his senior year he was AAA Indoor and Outdoor State Champion 800m.

Running in her second ECAC Outdoor Championship and competing in her specialty 800 meters, Holmes set a new school record and earned a spot in the NCAA Track & Field Championships with a 2:13.41 performance on Friday afternoon at Moravian College. Holmes, who won the second of the three heats run, placed third overall in the meet. This is her fourth such award this season. A 2009 graduate of Ridgefield High School, Holmes earned four letters in cross country. She was named All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) her junior year, and Second-Team All-FCIAC her sophomore and senior years. Holmes' high school team won FCIAC Championships twice, and was Connecticut class LL runner-up in 2006.
