Wagner Caps ECAC Qualification Triple Crown At Matthew Vassar Open

Meet Results

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 6, 2011) -- In its first and only home event of the season, the Vassar College men's track team hosted the Matthew Vassar Open on Friday evening and posted great results despite resting much of the middle distance contingent. The top performer was sophomore Sam Wagner who claimed the 400-meter dash in 49.82 to earn his third ECAC qualifying time of the season. “Sam is having a stellar season and put together a triple crown with ECAC qualifications in the 400, 800, and 1500,” said head coach James McCowan.

The Brewers compete in their final event before ECACs with the Oneonta Last Chance on Saturday, May 14.

Sophomore Mathúe Duhaney and freshman Abe Gatling took first and second in the 100-meters in 11.56 and 11.76, respectively. “They ran really well in the hundred into a head wind and I was pleased with their times,” said McCowan. “They also ran 52 flats in the 4x400 so they'll add some depth there as we look to qualify for ECACs.”

Duhaney finished second in the 200-meter dash in 23.24. Gatling placed third in the long jump with 6.42 meters for a season best and school record. “I was very impressed with Abe's long jump and he was a smidge shy of qualifying for ECAC but he still has another shot,” said McCowan.

In the 21-competitor field of the 1500-meter run, junior Justin Rupert was fourth in 4:04.83, edged in the final stretch by NYU's James Patterson (4:04.38). “This was a personal best for Justin and I'm very happy with how he ran,” said McCowan. “He's having a phenomenal season as a great captain and team leader.”

Thanks to pacing from Vassar's Zach Williams, NYU's Matt Turlip took first in 3:50.25 with a national qualifying time. “Zach looked very strong and had great workout at that pace,” said McCowan.

Senior Zach Ward led the field corps with a second place finish in the discus (29.87 meters) and third place in the javelin (40.67 meters). “Zach is a great multi guy and I'm very excited with his efforts,” said McCowan.

Roni Teich finished third in a competive 5000-meter in 15:52.30. “Roni had a good run but not quite on his personal record,” said McCowan.
