NEW HAVEN, CT (May 1, 2011) – On a perfect day for running, replete with sunshine and ideal temperatures, freshman
Chloe Williams etched her name into the record books as the new school record holder in the steeplechase. Her effort at the Yale Springtime Invitational on Sunday earned her a spot in the ECAC Championships at Moravian College on May 19.
In a very competitive field, Williams finished fourth overall with an 11:53.91 performance. According to head coach
James McCowan, “the race pulled out very fast and Chloe had to readjust." McCowan said Williams stayed assertive and closed at the finish. “It was the race we knew she had in her,” said McCowan. “It was great to get that ECAC qualifying time in a new event for her.”
Personal bests abounded for the Brewers on Sunday at Yale. Sophomore
Stephanie Malek ran a pair of bests, setting a new mark of 5:05 in the 1500 meters and a 2:31 time in the 800 meters. “It was a strong double for Stephanie,” said McCowan.
The 1500 meters was a marquee event for Vassar. Freshman
Emily Garber set a new standard at this distance (5:17.68) and senior
Rebecca Valencia continues to improve as the season progresses with a 5:14.6 time. “Rebecca led her heat line to line,” said McCowan. "It was an impressive run.”
In the 100 meter high hurdles, two new personal bests were set. The first came from sophomore
Kate Warrick with a 17.28 clocking and the second from freshman
Emily Denn in 18.61. Warrick also set a new personal best in the 400 high hurdles.
Sophomore
Kelly Holmes added to her legacy in the 800 meters, setting a new personal best of 2:17.39, which is two-tenths faster than her previous effort. “Kelly was very impressive today and closed strongly,” said McCowan.
The Brewers will next host the Matthew Vassar Open on Friday, May 6 at 5:00 pm.
