NEW HAVEN, CT (May 1, 2011) – With mentorship from senior Jonathan Erickson, the incumbent school record holder in the 800 meters, sophomore Sam Wagner used that tutelage and his own abundance of talent to set a new school record in this event on Sunday afternoon at the Yale Springtime Invitational, running a blistering 1:53.16 to earn an ECAC Qualifying time.

In only his second attempt at the 800 meters, and in his first and only race on Sunday, Wagner eclipsed Erickson's previous mark of 1:53.54 set earlier in the season. After being part of a school record effort in the 4 x 800 at the Penn Relays on Friday night, Wagner finished second overall in his heat on Sunday, leaning into the finish line for his impressive finish and a spot at the ECAC Championships on May 19 at Moravian College.

“Coming off the heels of the Penn Relays, running the 800 meters was a good fit for Sam,” said head coach James McCowan. “He had a very bold finish and it was an exceptional run from a competitive guy with a lot of tenacity at an event he can really excel at.”

Running in the 800 meters as well, junior Zach Williams just missed a personal best, finishing in 1:54.45. Following both runners' performances on Friday night at the Penn Relays, McCowan was especially encouraged by the strength of his 800 meter contingent. “There's a lot left for both Sam and Zach to do in this event.”

In the sprints, sophomore Mathúe Duhaney competed in both the 100 and 200 yard dash. He finished the 100 in 11:42 and set a season best of 23.67 in the 200 yard dash. Freshman Alvin Chang set two personal bests in those same events, running the 100 in 12:05 and the 200 in 24.03. “Both sprinters had exceptional days,” said McCowan.

Freshman Evan Herdrich continued the brigade of personal bests on Sunday, setting a new standard of excellence in the 400 hurdles with a time of 53.03.

Charles Wise, another talented freshman runner, set a new personal best in the 5000 meters, clocking in at 16:14. “Charles showed a lot of verve in this race," explained McCowan. "It's the strongest we've seen him run this distance all season.

The Brewers return to action on Friday, May 6 as hosts of the Matthew Vassar Open at 5:00 pm.
