4/25/2011 1:09:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's track and field team had an outstanding weekend, producing 25 IC4A qualifiers and five additions to the all-time top 10 lists in playing host to the six-team Outdoor Upstate Challenge on Saturday and in sending a half-dozen middle distance and distance runners to Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational on Friday evening.

Senior co-captain Adrien Dannemiller led the way on Friday, running 8:46.66 in his first 3000 steeplechase of 2011, a new personal best, second all-time at Cornell, the sixth best time in the nation so far this year and good enough for second in a great field.  Classmate Nate Edelman also ran very well, placing fourth in the 5000 in a seasonal best 14:06.00.  In the 1500, sophomore Andy Arnold had a big PR to place second in his heat, crossing the line in 3:49.54, an IC4A qualifier.  In the 800, sophomore Nick Wade again dipped under the Eastern standard with a run of 1:51.52 for sixth in his heat while freshman John Schilkowski and Will Weinlandt ran 1:53.85 and 1:54.97.
In Ithaca on Saturday, the Big Red men set three new track records and won nine times en route to scoring 257 points.  Ithaca College was second with 88, following by Buffalo at 87, Binghamton at 78 and Syracuse at 38.  There were a number of outstanding performances in the short sprints early in the meet that set the tone for the day.  The quartet of freshman Chris Bain, Jedidia Adarquah-Yiadom, junior Chase Aaronson and sophomore Bruno Hortelano-Roig ran 40.53 in the 4X100 to break their own track record and move to #3 all-time at Cornell.  The Cornell “B” team also went under the IC4A standard as freshman Kinsley Ojukwu, senior Andy Ahart, senior Brian Tan and freshman Justin McCollin ran 41.62 for third.  But it was in the 100 that the Big Red sprinters had major breakthroughs:  Hortelano-Roig moved to #5 all-time at Cornell with a new track record of 10.52 while freshman Kinsely Ojukwu moved to #8 all-time in winning his heat with a time of 10.57w.  Adarquah-Yiadom was third in 10.65 and Arnold ran 10.68, a huge PR, for fourth. Later, in the 200, McCollin ran 21.77w for second, just under the IC4A standard.
Great efforts were also evident in the hurdles as junior Brian Freitas won the 400 hurdles in 52.29.  Classmate Nick Huber was third in 53.00 and had another IC4A qualifier in setting a PR of 14.47 for second in the 110 hurdles.  The Big Red picked up another win, track record and IC4A qualifier in the 5000 as senior Matt De Silva ran 14:32.18 to win the 5000 by over 30 seconds.  In the 400, senior co-captain Cody Boyd ran 48.62 for second while junior Dan Thomas was fourth at 49.27.  In the 800, senior Tommy Roy won in 1:53.68 with sophomore David McCuiston a close second in 1:53.78.  Sophomore Bobby Micikas won the 1500 going away in 3:57.68; classmate Will McFall followed in second in 3:59.42.  The 4X400 closed out things on the track with a seasonal best of 3:13.65 (also under the old track record) placing second to a fine Binghamton squad behind legs from Thomas (49.6), senior co-captain Chris Tait (47.8), Freitas (47.5) and Boyd (48.4).
And great performances were not limited to the track.  Junior Bob Belden continued his winning ways in the shot put, reaching a seasonal best of 56-7 1/4 and then came back to get second in the discus at 158-11; both were IC4A qualifiers.  Sophomore Bob Fiedler was second in the hammer at 178-8 (an IC4A qualifer), and freshman Jon Gancas second in the javelin at 163-6.  Senior Gary Jones had a very good day in winning the triple jump in 50-5 1/2 while Steven Bell (2nd, 49-9) and senior Julian Remouns (3rd, 48-7 1/4) also qualified for the IC4As.  Sophomore Jourdan White was sixth in a competitive long jump, exceeding the IC4A requirement with a leap of 23-6 1/4.  In the vertical jumps, junior Chris Arlingahus clared 6-10 3/4 to win the high jump (#7 all-time) and easily cleared the IC4A standard while freshman Peter Roach in second and Huber in third both cleared 14-9 in the pole vault.
