ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's track team played host to Binghamton, Buffalo, Colgate, Ithaca College and Syracuse on Saturday as part of the Outdoor Upstate Challenge at the Robert J. Kane Sports Complex and came out victorious.  The competition was very good throughout the day and Cornell responded with strong performances across the board.
The Big Red women scored 215 points to outdistance Buffalo (175.5) as well as Ithaca College (59), Syracuse (56.5), Binghamton (55) and Colgate (12).  Cornell won four events, had nine ECAC qualifiers and had four changes to the all-time top ten lists.
Junior Dani Silas had a great day, twice bettering the ECAC standard as she ran 14.08 in the prelims of the 100 hurdles (#4 all-time at Cornell) before coming back to win the final in 14.12.  Sophomore Brittany Dombrowski continued to throw great, as she hit the ECAC standard for the first time, winning the javelin in a new PR of 139-4, now #4 all-time at Cornell.  Junior Melissa Hewitt was also an event winner and ECAC qualifier, as she took the long jump at 19-4 1/4; sophomore Rebecca Delong (3rd, 18-10 3/4), freshman Anjelique Parnell (4th, 18-8), junior Kristin Brandt (5th, 18-0 1/4) and freshman Jennifer Bush (6th, 18-0 1/4) also jumped well.
The Big Red's first event win on the day came in the very first event on the track as sophomore Suzana Markolovic set a PR for the third consecutive weekend in the 3000 steeplechase, running 11:07.67 to improve by over four seconds.   And Cornell's final individual win came in the last event of the day as freshman Dale Kinney ran 9:57.65 to place first in the 3000; sophomores Cara Costich (10:08.96) and Kate Rosettie (10:09.99) were second and third while frehman Liz Simpson (4th, 10:20.10) and junior Shelby Herman (5th, 10:20.31) also performed well.
Senior co-captain Mecha Santos had a great day as she hit the ECAC standard in two events.  Santos ran 11.79w to place second in the 100, moving her up to #3 all-time at Cornell.  She then came back to run 24.90 for fifth in the 200.  Freshman Ebolutalese Airewele had a great run in the 200 as well to move to #10 all-time at Cornell with a big PR of 24.72 for third in the 200.  Junior Molly Glantz again dipped under both the 60 second barrier and the ECAC standard with a second place run of 59.72 in the 400 hurdles.
Cornell's other individual ECAC qualifier came in the triple jump as sophomore Savannah Johnson had her best series of the year in reaching 39-7 1/2 for second.  Senior Kim Lienhoop was third in 39-0 1/2, Hewitt was fourth at 38-7 3/4 and Brandt was fifth at 38-5.  Earlier, Lienhoop placed second in the high jump (clearing 5-5) as sophomore Ailish Hanley and freshman Sarah Udelhofen cleared 5-3 to finish fourth and fifth.  Sophomore Claire Dishong also had a good double as she was second in the pole vault at 11-3 3/4 and came back to get third in a seasonal best 137-2 in the discus.  Junior Erin Rossi was third in the hammer at 158-9.
Back on the track, the Big Red finished second, third and fifth in the 1500 as sophomore Genna Hartung (4:46.39), freshman Rachel Sorna (4:47.50) and junior Christine Curtis (4:51.27) all ran well.  In the 400, freshman Ryan Woolley had a very good race to place second overall in 56.56 and was followed closely by junior Kelsey Reimnitz, who ran 56.63 for third.  Senior co-captain Kim Standridge was fifth at 57.32 while junior Bry Bonavita was sixth at 57.60.  Sophomore Liz Reamer ran 2:17.71 in a good race for fourth in the 800 and freshman Andrea Sielicki had a seasonal best of 2:19.40 for sixth.
And the Big Red closed out the meet with a seasonal best of 3:47.37 in the 4X400, a time that was under the old track record and which was enough for second behind a good Buffalo quartet.  Airewele, Reimnitz, Glantz and Standridge teamed up to better the ECAC standard.
