EWING, NJ (April 9, 2011) – Ideal spring conditions proved favorable for the Vassar College women's track team, which produced two individual champions at the New Jersey Invitational hosted by The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Zoe Carpenter, running in her first-ever 1500 meters, out-paced a field of 21 runners to capture the event with a 4:51 finish, more than four seconds faster than the second place finisher, Kara McMahon from Haverford. In the 800 meter run, sophomore Kelly Holmes showcased her mettle and speed, winning the race in 2:17.57, and most importantly earning herself an ECAC Qualifying time in the process. Those were just two of several distinguished performances for the Brewers, who saw freshman Aubree Piepmeier finish second in the 3000 meter run (10.21.85).

The Brewers will take this momentum into their next meet at the Liberty League Championships hosted by St. Lawrence University on April 16.

“This was Zoe's first-ever 1500 meter race and she won it,” said head coach James McCowan. “It was an incredible race and a beautiful thing to watch.”

In the 800 meters, Holmes continues to showcase herself as one of regions top performers. “The 800 meters is her marquee event and she proved that again today,” said McCowan. “She closed with a magnificent kick and I am very proud of her effort.”

Piepmeier showcased her burgeoning talent, running the second fastest 3000 meters in school history. “Aubree finished second to a multiple All-America (Robin England of Rutgers-Camden) and simply ran a phenomenal race,” said McCowan. “This race proves she is in the upper echelon of runners and can compete against the very best around.”

In the 1500 meters, the race captured by Carpenter, Vassar showcased its depth and versatility, by placing sophomore Hannah Ziobrowski in 7th (5:09.83), sophomore Stephanie Malek in 8th (5:10.11) and senior Brittany Davis in 11th (5:21.38).

Sophomore Laura Van Eerde was a third place finisher in the javelin throw with a 33.84 meter effort. Van Eerde also competed in the discus where she finished 10th. “It was good throw for her,” said McCowan. “She has more in her arm. She is just starting to come around.”

Sophomore Kate Warrick finished an impressive 5th in the 100 meter hurdles (17.86), competing against a strong field of TCNJ hurdlers. “Katherine is coming along nicely,” said McCowan. “We're looking to crack 17 seconds, and that's in her ability range.”
