EWING, NJ (April 9, 2011) – Senior
Jonathan Erickson is used to photo finishes in cross country, and on Saturday at the New Jersey Invitational hosted by The College of New Jersey, Erickson was edged by .49 seconds in his quest to capture the 800 meter run, but his performance was still stellar, and earned him an ECAC Qualifying time. Erickson's second place finish was one of many improving performances for the Brewers on Saturday under picture perfect conditions.
Erickson was narrowly edged by Haverford's Ivo Milic-Strkalj (1:54.32 to 1:54.81). “Jon got boxed out at the start of the race, but had a strong finish,” said head coach
James McCowan. “He is way ahead of schedule for this time of the season, and we're happy about that. It was a very close race, one that he would have won had it been another 10 meters. We're looking forward to him getting his time down in the coming weeks.”
The Brewers will take this momentum into their next meet at the Liberty League Championships hosted by St. Lawrence University on April 16.
In the 800 meters, junior
Zach Williams finished a respectable 6th place (1:56.39), adding necessary depth
in this event for the Brewes.
Competing in the 3000 meters, sophomore
Roni Teich had an outing worthy of Vassar's all-time top 10 list, finishing in 8:58. “We were hoping and talked about a 9:05 time, and Roni ran considerably faster, so we're happy about his performance,” says McCowan.
A pair of strong milers, juniors
Sam Wagner and
Justin Rupert finished 4th and 5th in the 1500 meters with Wagner logging in at 4:04.59 and Rupert in 4:09.02. Competing in the men's long jump, Wagner finished in 6th place. “Rupert really had a breakout race and that bodes well for next weekend at Liberty Leagues,” McCowan offered.
Running in the 100 meters, a new event for him, freshman
Abe Gatling earned a spot in the finals, placing 7th..
The Brewers had a 4th place finisher in a very fast 110 meter hurdles competition, with
Evan Herdrich finishing in 18.62. “Evan is doing a really good job”, said McCowan. "He is still getting his technique down, but we're happy with the improvements he's making.”
