Men's Track Sprinters Show Promise At Roadrunner Invitational

Meet Results

MAHWAH, NJ (April 2, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's track team had a strong outing from the sprinting ranks and finished 12th in the 17-team field of the Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday.

“It's great to see everyone really improving their bottom line speed in the 400s and getting together and working as a team,” said head coach James McCowan.

The Brewers next compete in the College of New Jersey Invitational on Saturday, April 9, at 11:00 a.m.

Freshman Abe Gatling competed in the 100-meter dash for the first time and made the finals with a time of 11.68. “Abe ran his first 400 and he's a now a leading candidate for the third leg of 4x400,” said McCowan. “He also got off to a great start in the 4x100 so he was our MVP of the meet.”

Sophomore Mathue Duhaney finished seventh in the 100-meter finals in 11.67 and took 24th in the 200-meter dash in 24.07. “Mathue was our top runner in the 100 with an all-around strong performance,” said McCowan. “He's still working on getting back his track stamina, coming out of the pool to lead the sprint contingent.”

Junior Zach Williams set a personal best and took second in the 1500-meter run in 4:04.17. “Zach showed his range of abilities and can be a star performer in anything from the 400 to 1500,” said McCowan. “We'll see where he fits in best as we move forward and he's only two seconds off ECAC qualification.”

Williams came back in the 4x400-meter run with senior Jon Erickson and the pair ran very well according to McCowan. “Zach and Jon are the backbone of a very strong 4x400 team we're looking forward to putting together in the next couple weeks,” said McCowan.

Freshman Evan Herdrich made the finals in the high hurdles and finished seventh in 18.65. “Evan did a good job in the hurdles and really shows promise,” said McCowan. “He's a great addition to program.”
