Liberty League Honors Nine Athletes From Five Programs

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 28, 2011) – With 11 Vassar College athletics programs in action last weekend, the Liberty League bestowed honors upon nine athletes from five programs. Jennifer Beckerman and Lindsay Kantor of women's tennis; Andrew Guzick of men's tennis, Dave Robbins of baseball, Zoe Carpenter, Laura Van Eerde, and Aubree Piepmeier of women's track; and Jon Erickson and Abe Gatling of men's track earned weekly awards.

Jennifer Beckerman
Jennifer Beckerman, Junior, Women's Tennis, Liberty League Co-Performer of the Week
In a 7-2 win over No. 19 Skidmore, Beckerman teamed with Alyssa Roush to swing a 7-2 deficit into a 9-8 (9-7) win at second doubles. She knocked off Melissa Hirsch 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. A two-time Liberty League All-Conference Singles selection and Liberty League Rookie of the Year, this is her fifth weekly award this season. A 2008 graduate of Santa Barbara High School, Beckerman lettered in tennis three years. She played No. 2 singles in her junior and senior season. Beckerman was named First Team Channel League and reached the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) finals in 2006 and the semifinals in 2007.

Lindsay Kantor
Lindsay Kantor, Freshman, Women's Tennis, Liberty League Rookie of the Week
Kantor won both of her matches in a 7-2 win over No. 19 Skidmore. She teamed with Natalie Santiago for an 8-4 win over Sophia Bryan-Ajania and Keirsten Sires at No. 3 doubles. She rolled over Sires 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. This is Kantor's sixth Liberty League Rookie of the Week award. A 2010 graduate Westhampton Beach High School, Kantor was a four time League Doubles Champion and part of the No. 2 doubles team in the State as a Suffolk County Doubles Champion her senior year.

Andrew Guzick
Andrew Guzick, Sophomore, Men's Tennis, Liberty League Co-Performer of the Week
Guzick continued his five-match win streak with a 6-7 (7), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win over Andrew Lutz of Tufts at No. 2 singles. He teamed with Max Willner for an 8-6 win over Morrie Bossen and Mark Westerfield. This is his fifth Performer of the Week award. In the Fall, Guzick won the ITA Northeast Regional Championship and recorded the program's first singles win at the National Small College Championships. Last year, Guzick was named name Liberty League Rookie of the Week eight times and won the Liberty League Rookie of the Year. A 2009 graduate of the Harley School, Guzick was a five-year letter winner in tennis. He was named Finger Lakes All-League his sophomore through senior year and selected to the All Greater Rochester team as a junior and senior. At Harley, his team was ranked No. 10 in the nation his senior year and No. 7 his junior year.

Dave Robbins, Freshman, Baseball, Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Week
Robbins batted .571 (8-for-14) with an on-base percentage of .600 and a .571 slugging percentage in a 1-3 weekend for Vassar. Robbins delivered the game-winning RBI single in Vassar's 11-10 10-inning win over Clarkson. In that game, he went 4-for-5 with three RBI. This is his second consecutive weekly award. A 2010 graduate of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, Robbins lettered three years in baseball for head coach Kevin James. A Shore All-Conference selection, Robbins helped his team to the Shore Conference Finals and the State Finals in 2008. He batted .340 as a sophomore, .435 as a junior, and .350 as a senior.

Zoe Carpenter
Zoe Carpenter, Senior, Liberty League Track Performer of the Week

Carpenter made an outstanding 5K debut in 18:22.72 to earn ECAC qualification at the Monmouth Season Opener. A 2007 graduate of Catlin High School, Carpenter lettered two years in track for head coach Lerry Baker. As a senior, she set the school record in women's pole vault and qualified for State.

Laura Van Eerde
Laura Van Eerde, Sophomore, Liberty League Field Performer of the Week

Van Eerde threw 30.80 meters in the javelin at the Monmouth Season Opener. A three-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week last season, this is her first Field Performer of the week award.

Aubree Piepmeier, Freshman, Women's Track, Liberty League Rookie of the Week
In the 5,000-meter run, Piepmeier finished in 18:25 to earn ECAC qualification at the Monmouth Season Opener. This is her second such award. A 2010 graduate of Franklin High School (MA), Piepmeier lettered three years in and also competed in indoor and outdoor track and field and captained all three teams as a senior. As a junior, she won the Hockamock League Indoor 1000m event.

Jon Erickson
Jon Erickson, Senior, Liberty League Track Performer of the Week

Without having competed in the 800-meter run in nearly two years, senior captain Jon Erickson posted his fastest season-opening time in 1:56.68 for second place. This is his sixth career weekly award and his first Performer of the Week award in two years. Erickson graduated from DuPont Manual in 2007 where he was a two-year letter winner in track and cross country. He was Academic All-State in 2006 and 2007 named All Region in 2006 and 2007 All-State in 2007. Erickson holds the 800m record at DuPont Manual and was also a member of the record setting 4x800m relay team. During his junior year he was AAA Indoor State runner-up in the 800m and in his senior year he was AAA Indoor and Outdoor State Champion 800m.

Abe Gatling, Freshman, Men's Track, Liberty League Rookie of the Week
With only one day of track practice under his belt because of the transition from basketball, freshman Abe Gatling led off 4x100-meter relay and went straight into the long jump with hardly any warm-up. Gatling's impressive 6.12-meter long jump puts him within striking distance an ECAC qualification.
