WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ (March 26, 2011) -- The Vassar College women's track team opened its season in the frigid Northeast with a solid performance against 32 colleges with 15 Division I programs in the Annual Monmouth University Season Opener on Saturday.

“Overall, we're really happy with the day,” said head coach James McCowan. “We're missing some strong women but everyone is stepping up performing well. This team has good potential and we're excited for better weather and more races.”

The Brewers next compete in the Princeton Sam Howell Distance Classic on Friday, April 1, and the Ramapo Invitational on Saturday, April 2.

McCowan was pleased with the 4x100-meter team and said, “They were really smooth and nailed the handoffs which is great especially when we haven't been able to do a lot of work on it yet.”

Sophomore Kate Warrick ran the 100 and 400 hurdles and McCowan said, “Kate opened in 100 hurdles faster than last year so she's in a great position to make big improvements.”

In the 1500-meter run, senior Jenica Law improved on her time of 5:13 in Arizona with a 5:07.83. “Jenica was our top runner in the 1500 and she's still learning the event so it's exciting going forward,” said McCowan.

Sophomore Stephanie Malek, freshman Emily Garber, and sophomore Arial Shogren also had strong races in the 1500-meter event.

Sophomore Laura Van Eerde threw 30.80-meters in the javelin. “I'm happy to see that as a good starting point for Laura and she will make big improvements as she goes for the ECAC qualifying mark.

In the 800-meter run, Malek won her heat in 2:35.02. “It was nice to see Stephanie getting a lot sharper and stronger with huge improvements,” said McCowan.

The 5,000-meter run was a hallmark race for the Brewers as eight runners finished in under 20 minutes and two were under 18:30. Senior captain Zoe Carpenter made an outstanding 5K debut in 18:22 and freshman Aubree Piepmeier finished in 18:25 to qualify for the ECAC. “Zoe ran very smart race went stride for stride with Aubree, who was All-Region in cross country,” said McCowan. “Aubree shaved off 51 seconds from her 19:13 time last week.”

Freshman Chloe Williams finished in 19:30, junior Hannah Ziobrowski was 19:37, Shogren was 19:43, junior Melissa McClung was 19:43, and sophomore Kristine Olson was 19:59.

“To end the day, the 4x400 relay had a good showing on tired legs,” said McCowan. “That relay that will be getting a lot faster.”
