TUCSON, AZ (March 18, 2011) -- After a week of training in the Arizona desert, the Vassar College men's and women's track teams opened the outdoor season on Friday at the Willie Williams Classic, hosted by University of Arizona at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
The Brewers next compete against RPI on Saturday, March 26, at 11:00 a.m.
In the women's 5,000-meter run, the Brewers were led by strong freshmen performances from
Aubree Piepmeier and
Chloe Williams with times of 19:13.73 and 19:44. Freshman
Arial Shogren (20.15.58) and sophomore
Melissa McClung (20:16.29) were close behind.
In the 1500-meter run, senior
Jenica Law set the pace for classmate
Rebecca Valencia and freshman
Emily Garber, with times of 5:13, 5:23 and 5:28, respectively. The Brewers also competed in the Steeplechase and 200-meter run.
In the men's 1500-meter run, junior

Sam Wagner (4:11.80) in the final stretch. Junior
Justin Rupert and freshman
Harry Feigen clocked in at 4:23.09 and 4:32.51.
In the men's 5000-meter run, sophomore
Roni Teich (16:28.11) had a gutsy run in a very competitive field, followed by junior
Evan Russek (16:53.28).
"This is a good start to the season for us," said head coach
James McCowan. "The sun and warmth were a welcome break from this year's long winter, but it is often difficult to perform our best here. This week the heat and a stomach virus were definitely challenges to overcome, and we definitely have room to improve. That said, I'm proud of our runners and how they competed today."
With much of the team recovering from a norovirus, only sophomores
Tiffany Marchell and
Kelly Holmes competed in the second day. Holmes took 10th in the 26-runner 800-meter run in 2.23.08.
"Kelly put up a great mark for Liberty Leagues," said McCowan.
Marchell placed 14th in the 100 yard dash in 14.14.
