The Indoor State Weight Throw Champion is proving that the rotational events are the key to his success. Outdoors, it's the Hammer, the Olympic event, and he's wasting no time moving up the ranks.
Senior Charles Sullivan (Somers) unleashed a monster series at his home Invitational this weekend, the Somers Lions Club Invitational, putting out six throws over 220-ft. His best effort was a new personal best of 238-3, on the fifth throw of the competition.
The mark moves him up to NY-5 All-Time in the event, the best throw by a New Yorker since Michael Feldman went 242-8 in 2017.
The Hammer Throw is not contested in New York State Outdoors, despite including the Weight Throw Indoors. There was interest in incorporating it two years back, but the lack of proper facilities statewide tempered those desires.
Despite that, New York is home to Rudy Winkler, who went unattached his Junior Year of High School to pursue the event. He went on to break the New York State Record in 2013 with a throw of 260-5, which remains as the #2 Prep performance of All-Time. Flash forward to 2025, and Winkler now holds the American Record in the event.
Sullivan has committed to throw at Wisconsin in the Fall.
