Women's Track Takes 13 ECAC Qualifying Performances

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's track team was represented at two different venues this weekend:  at the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas on Friday evening and at home in Barton Hall with the 24 team Robert J. Kane Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  The weekened was highlighted by several alterations to the school all-time top ten lists and thirteen ECAC qualifying performances.

On Friday night at the University of Arkansas, junior Molly Glantz placed eighth overall in the invitational 800, running the #7 time in school history, 2:09.21 to place third in her section.  Senior co-captain Kim Standridge ran 2:10.17 to finish seventh in her section and tenth overall.

Back in Ithaca, the Big Red women had a very good weekend at the Kane Invitational as well, winning twelve events and producing eleven ECAC qualifiers.  Cornell was particularly strong in the sand, with a number of break-through efforts in the long and triple jumps.  Junior Melissa Hewitt had a great day, winning the long jump in a personal best 20-3, making her the second best performer in school history.  She also came back to place second in the triple jump, reaching 39-5, good enough for eighth best all-time at Cornell.  Classmate Kristin Brandt was also spectacular, winning the triple jump at 40-1 1/2, #6 all-time indoors at Cornell after placing third in a seasonal best 18-7 in the long jump.  Freshman Anjelique Parnell had a terrific day, setting a PR of 19-3 1/2 to get second in the long jump, easily an ECAC qualifier.  Senior co-captain Kim Lienhoop had a seasonal best in the triple jump, reaching 39-2 1/4, good enough to qualify for the ECACs and place third; she also placed third in the high jump, clearing 5-5.  Junior Sam Brady cleared 11-9 3/4 cleanly and for the second straight week, winning the pole vault this week and clearing the ECAC standard; sophomore Claire Dishong was second at 11-3 3/4.  In the throws, sophomore Victoria Imbesi threw over 46 feet for the second time this season and bettered the ECAC standard for the fourth straight week in the shot put, winning the event at 46-2 1/2.  Senior Cassie Schweighofer was second at 43-5 1/4 and was also fourth in the weight throw at 50-9 1/2.  Junior Erin Rossi was second in the weight throw with a mark of 51-9. 

The women's 1000 produced three ECAC qualifiers for the Big Red as sophomore Alyssa O'Connor won in a personal best 2:52.29 while junior Janel Parker was close behind in second, running 2:52.78 for another personal best.  Freshman Lauren Lloyd was third in 2:56.11 and classmate Leanne Fernandes placed fourth in 2:56.11.  There were a pair of ECAC qualifiers and a number of very good efforts in the 3K:  sophomore Katie Kellner won for the second straight week and set a PR again, this time running 9:50.37 while classmate Genna Hartung ran very well for second in a seasonal best 9:53.70.  Sophomores Cara Costich (4th, 10:04.36) and Kate Rosettie (5th, in a PR 10:07.14) and freshman Liz Simpson (6th, 10:16.77) also ran well.  In the 5000, sophomore Neesha Schnepf ran a very good race to place first in 17:48.63 while classmate Suzana Markolovic was fourth in 18:25.56.   Junior Bry Bonavita led wire-to-wire to place first in the 800, crossing the line in 2:17.04.  Senior co-captain Mecha Santos won the 60 in 7.86, leading sophomore Mercy Gbenjo (7.94, a seasonal best) and freshman Ebolutalese Airewele (7.99) to a 1-2-3 Big Red sweep.  Cornell also took the top three spots in the 200:  junior Kelsey Reimnitz placed first in 25.81 while freshman Dorehn Coleman was second at 26.20 and Gbenjo placed third in 26.31.  The Big Red also got an event win from freshman Ryan Wooley, who took the 400 in 59.96.   Junior Dani Silas ran a good race for second in the 60 hurdles (8.84) while senior Lauren Tanz had a seasonal best of 9.05 for third.  Other good showings came from freshman Dale Kinney, who was second in the mile in 5:09.70 and sophomore Julia Fiore, who was second in the 500 in 1:22.97.   In the pentathlon on Friday night, sophomore Erin McKee was third in a personal best 2,911 points.  And lastly, the 4X400, comprised of Santos, sophomore Libby O'Brien, Wooley and Bonavita ran 4:01.22 to place first.

Next up is the Marc Deneault Invitational at Cornell on Saturday, February 19th.  And then Cornell will head to the Indoor Heps at the Armory in New York City, on February 26-27.
