STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Big Red men's track team more than held its own in a competitive field of eleven teams at Penn State's Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday in State College, as Cornell placed second in the team scoring behind the host Nittany Lions. The Cornell men boasted 16 IC4A qualifying efforts and had more than 25 top-10 finishes to go along with five alterations to the all-time top 10 lists.
Several performances in the field events stood out: junior
Bob Belden continued his great season with an 20-inch personal best of 57-8 1/4 to get fourth in the shot put, a mark that moves him to second all-time at Cornell behind only Dave Doupe '77. Belden also placed third in the weight throw, reaching 58-8. Junior
Chris Arlinghaus cleared a personal best of 6-10 1/4 to place fourth in the high jump and moved to seventh all-time indoors at Cornell. Junior
Chase Aaronson eclipsed the IC4A standard with a leap of 23-6 1/4 for third in the long jump while freshman Steve Bell was ninth at 23-0. Senior
Julian Remouns bettered the IC4A mark with a mark of 47-3 for seventh in the triple jump.
Cornell picked 15 points right off the bat on the track as senior
Steve Soprano placed first in the 5000, running 15:05.64 while sophomore
Brett Kelly was fourth in 15:10.59. Senior co-captain
Adrien Dannemiller and classmate
Matt De Silva had strong showings in the 3000 as both easily bettered the IC4A standard and set personal bests: Dannemiller closed well to get second in 8:18.06 while DeSilva was third in 8:21.37. Junior Danny Hagberg had a great day, placing second in the 60 hurdles in 8.10, #3 all-time at Cornell. The Big Red also got a great effort from sophomore
Nick Wade in the 800, as he ran 1:50.92 for fifth. Junior Chris Jakobsen was sixth in the 600 in a good 1:21.64 and sophomore
Andy Arnold had a seasonal best in the mile to again dip under the IC4A qualifying time, running 4:11.64 for third. Cornell had another good day in the 60, as sophomore Jedidia Adarquah-Yiadom was fifth in 6.86 (#5 all-time) and freshman
Kinsley Ojukwu was seventh in 6.95. Ojukwu came back to dip under the IC4A standard in the 200 as well, running 22.18. The Big Red had a pair of IC4A qualifiers in the 400: senior
Cody Boyd ran 48.47 for eighth and junior
Brian Freitas was eleventh in 49.16. Junior Dan Thomas ran well for twelfth in 49.30.
In the relays, freshmen
Will Weinlandt,
Andre Anderson and Steve Harshman teamed up with senior
Steve Soprano (who doubled back from the 5K) to place fifth in the DMR in a seasonal best and IC4A-qualifying 10:16.15 while Boyd (48.5), Thomas (48.4), junior Ken McClain (48.8) and Freitas (47.9) ran 3:13.72 for third, which moved to #9 all-time at Cornell.
