ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell hosted its first scored meet of the season on Friday and Saturday at Barton Hall and the Big Red women claimed the team titles at the Upstate Challenge against Binghamton, Buffalo, Cortland, Ithaca College and Syracuse. The Cornell women had 11 ECAC qualifiers and 11 event wins over the course of the weekend, scoring 282 points to finish well ahead of second place Buffalo.

The meet got off to a great start for the women on Friday night as senior co-captain Kim Standridge, junior Bry Bonavita, junior Janel Parker and junior Meghan Brown ran 11:49.38 in the distance medley relay to break the Barton Hall record set in December 2004 by some greats from the class of 2005 (Alison Koplar, Shonda and Jessica Brown and Carrie Richards). The Big Red showed impressive depth in the middle distances as two other Cornell DMR teams also qualified for the ECACs, with an all-freshman quartet of Lauren Lloyd, Ebolutalese Airewele, Leanne Fernandes and Dale Kinney placing second in 12:06.63 and sophomore Alyssa O'Connor, freshman Ryan Wooley, senior Alana Levy and senior Maura Carroll running 12:12.24 for third. And in the pentathlon, junior Karen Schillinger had a very good evening to place fourth with the second best total of her career, scoring 3,305 points with performances of 9.13 in the 60 hurdles, 17-9 in the long jump, 5-3 in the high jump, 34-7 3/4 in the shot put and 2:51.72 in the 800. Freshman Rebecca Parascandola was fifth with 3,103.

The Big Red had a terrific day in the field events on Saturday as the scored portion of the meet began, with the jumpers and throwers leading the women to a commanding team victory. Senior co-captain Kim Lienhoop had a fantastic day, highlighted by a personal best of 5-7 in the high jump to move up to #8 all-time at Cornell (and also good enough to qualify for the ECACs and easily win the event). She also placed second in the triple jump in a seasonal best 38-7 and was fourth in the long jump at 17-0 1/4.

Cornell also saw very impressive break-throughs in the throws. In the weight throw, junior Erin Rossi moved to #9 all-time at Cornell with an ECAC-qualifying 53-2 3/4. Senior Cassie Schweighofer had a big seasonal best to place fourth in 52-3 1/4. And in the shot put, sophomore Victoria Imbesi was also outstanding, setting a personal best by nearly three feet to place second and move to #3 all-time at Cornell with a heave of 46-8 1/4, easily outdistancing the ECAC standard. In the long jump, junior Melissa Hewitt reached an ECAC-qualifying 19-1 1/2 while freshman Angelique Parnell continued to impress in placing second at 18-6. Junior Kristin Brandt had a solid day in placing third in both the long jump (17-11 3/4) and triple jump (38-6 1/4). Junior Sam Brady was second in the vault, clearing 11-3 3/4, while sophomore Claire Dishong cleared the same height to get third. Sophomore Ailish Hanly was third in the high jump at 5-3.

In addition to the exploits in the field, the Cornell women had a number of very strong showings on the track.  The Big Red swept the top three places in both the mile and 3K. A quartet of sophomores went 1-4 in the mile: Kelsey Karys won in a time of 5:04.91 and was followed by Katie Kellner (a personal best 5:07.37), Kate Rosettie (5:08.88, also a personal best) and Genna Hartung (another PR of 5:09.26). Another sophomore, Cara Costich ran away with the 3K in a big personal best of 10:07.53; freshman Liz Simpson was second at 10:30.50 and junior Shelby Herman ran well to get third in 10:30.91. Junior Janel Parker led wire-to-wire to claim the 800 in 2:15.29 and sophomore Alyssa O'Connor also led from the gun in cruising to victory in the 1000 in 2:57.80; junior Meghan Brown was second at 2:59.55. Cornell also got an impressive win from junior Dani Silas in the 60 hurdles (8.85), who had a busy day, competing in three events. Classmate Taylor Baird improved to 9.11 to get third. The Big Red advanced a pair to the ECACs in the long sprints: junior Molly Glantz looked strong in winning the 400 in 57.73 while Standridge ran a personal best 1:16.28 to place second in the 500. Cornell closed out the meet with victories in the final two relays as the 4X800 of sophomore Marie McKenna, freshman Meaghan Werle, freshman Andrea Sielicki and junior Christine Curtis ran 9:46.36 and the 4X400 of Airewele, Wooley, Glantz and Bonavita ran 3:57.40.
