STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Cornell men's track and field team more than held their own at the nationally competitive Nittany Lion Challenge at Penn State on Saturday, competing against the defending indoor national champion Florida Gators, eighth-ranked Penn State, defending America East champion Albany and ACC power Maryland.

The Big Red's efforts were highlighted by 12 IC4A qualifiers, 10 top three event finishes, a school record and a school freshman record.  Sophomore Nick Wade broke his own school record in the 1000 (set last year at this meet), crossing the line second in an outstanding 2:23.66.  The future of the men's middle distance group is bright as he was followed closely by freshman John Schilkowski, who ran a terrific 2:24.35, which is #3 all-time and less than half a second from Wade's freshman record.

Sophomore Andy Arnold also ran well, dipping under the IC4A standard as well with a personal best of 2:26.74 for fifth.  It was a good day in the 800 as well, as freshman Will Weinlandt placed second in an IC4A-qualifying 1:53.96.  Junior Chris Jakobsen was third in 1:54.93, missing the IC4A standard by only .03.  Senior Adrien Dannemiller also had a fine day, setting a mile PR of 4:08.56 to place third and easily eclipse the IC4A qualifying mark; at the time of writing this report, Dannemiller's time is the ninth best mile in the nation so far this year.

In addition to the youth movement in the middle distances, a number of gifted young sprinters competed well.   Freshman Chris Bain continued to impress, qualifying for the finals against a very impressive 60 dash field with a preliminary time of 6.92.  He then came back to get fourth in the final, crossing the line in 6.89, an IC4A qualiifer.  Sophomore Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom just missed the final, placing 10th in 6.96, but also just under the IC4A standard for the third straight meet.  Rookie Justin McCollin set a new school freshman record in the 200, running 22.15 to get sixth and qualify for the IC4As and move up to #5 all-time in school history.  Yet another freshman sprinter, Andre Anderson, impressed by placing third in the 400 in 49.83.  Senior co-captain Cody Boyd was fifth in 50.43 despite getting boxed in.  Elsewhere on the track, juniors Dan Hagberg (8.31) and Nick Huber (8.30) advanced to a competitive 60 hurdle final, with Hagberg the first non-Florida finisher, placing fifth in 8.30; Huber ended up eighth in 8.39.  In the 600, junior Brian Freitas was ninth in 1:21.53 with junior Dan Thomas tenth in 1:21.65.

In the relays, the men's distance medley relay of Weinlandt (3:05.7 for 1200), Wade (49.2 for 400), sophomore Will McFall (2:01.0 for 800) and Jakobsen (4:29.9 for 1600) ran 10:26.38 for third.  And the 4X400 ran well to place fourth in 3:16.45 as Boyd (48.5), senior co-captain Chris Tait (50.0), Freitas (48.6) and Thomas (49.2) to easily best the IC4A standard.

Junior Bob Belden once again led the way for Cornell in the throws.  The men's shot put featured four of the top eight from last year's NCAA Championships and Belden did well to place fifth, reaching a seasonal best of 55-9 1/2.  Earlier, in the weight throw, he was sixth against another stellar field, producing a mark of 58-0 1/2; both of his performances were IC4A qualifiers.  Fellow junior Chris Arlinghaus was third in the high jump at 6-8 3/4 to clear the IC4A standard and sophomore Peter Roach cleared 14-7 1/4 to place second in the vault with freshman David Kim fourth at 14-1 1/4.  Freshman Steven Bell was second in the long jump at 22-9 1/4 and classmate Dan Scott was fourth in the triple jump at 45-9.
