Women's Cross Country Finishes Sixth At NCAA Regional

11/14/2010 12:48:01 AM

MADISON, Conn. -- Running in beautiful conditions on a great course at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Conn., the Big Red women's cross country team finished a very competitive sixth at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday afternoon. The women were led by a pair of All-Region honorees, as freshman Devin McMahon (11th) and sophomore Kelsey Karys (23rd) ran personal bests in the women's 6K to finish in the top 25.
The women raced in sunny, 60 degree weather and only light winds confronting the racers. Despite graduating two from last year's team, including All-Region honoree Stephanie Pancoast '10, the women finished 6th for the third straight year, scoring 209 points, only 3 points behind Heps rival Columbia and ahead of Brown, both of whom had defeated Cornell by over 30 points two weeks ago at the Heps. #9 Syracuse (78), #15 Stony Brook (83), #14 Providence (87) and #22 Boston College (92) were the first four teams, and Stony Brook's senior duo of Lucy Van Dalen and Holly Van Dalen placed first and second overall.

With the great (and unseasonable) running conditions, the pace was honest from the beginning, with the lead group around 5:10 at the mile. McMahon and Karys did an outstanding job establishing themselves in the top 15-20 by the 2K mark and continued to roll along from there, with McMahon steadily advancing through the field in the middle loop of the course before eventually finishing 11th in a 36 second personal best of 20:23.9 for 6K to earn her first career All-Region award. Karys competed extremely well throughout to produce a 27 second personal best of 20:54.4 as she finished her season with her best race of the fall. Her 23rd place finish was also good enough to earn the first All-Region honor of her career. After getting stuck at the start, sophomore Genna Hartung moved up steadily and with determination throughout the race to run a seasonal best of 21:22.9 in 45th (the 11th Heps finisher). Senior Kristin Sellers ran a great final race for Cornell to set a PR of 21:34.0 to place 58th and junior Janel Parker rounded out the scoring with a personal best as well, placing 72nd in 21:46.3. Senior captain Maura Carroll closed out her fine cross country career for Cornell with a solid race, finishing in 84th with a time of 21:57.7. Sophomore Cara Costich was 101st in the field of 247 finishers in 22:08.7 to complete the team's day.
