Edelman Paces Men's Cross Country To Sixth At NCAA Regionals

11/14/2010 12:51:56 AM

MADISON, Conn. -- On a very fast course overlooking the Connecticut coast, the Big Red men placed 6th out of 38 teams at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet in unseasonably warm conditions at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Conn. Syracuse won the team title with 56 points, followed by Iona (63), Providence (113), Dartmouth (138), and Columbia (146). Cornell (232 points) defeated Heps rivals Brown (8th place), Yale (11th), and Harvard (12th) to improve on last year's 7th place finish and 235 point total (Princeton and Pennsylvania compete in the Mid-Atlantic Region). Iona's Leonard Korir won the race in 29:36.9 over a field of 229 runners.

Cornell was again led by the accomplished senior trio of Nate Edelman, Adrien Dannemiller, and Matt De Silva. Edelman ran his best race of the season, running with the top pack throughout the 10-kilometer course to finish 13th in 30:17.4. After finishing 93rd at last year's NCAA National Championships, Nate awaits to see if he has earned an at-large individual berth into this year's championships. The NCAA field will be announced on Sunday evening. Nate was the 4th Ivy finisher in today's race, defeating all four Dartmouth runners who finished ahead of him at the Heps two weeks ago. Edelman won his 2nd consecutive All-Region honor to match his two All-Ivy Heps finishes and has led the Big Red in three races this season.

Adrien Dannemiller finished 17th in 30:24.2, also earning All-Region accolades, awarded to the top 25 finishers. Adrien concluded an outstanding cross-country career with his second All-Region performance in three years to go along with two All-Ivy finishes at the Heps. Dannemiller was the top finisher for the Big Red at two meets this season, including his season-opening overall win against Army.

Team captain Matt De Silva ran a gutsy race to finish 28th in 30:51.2, just missing All-Region recognition. DeSilva concluded a wonderful cross-country career at Cornell that included a second team All-Ivy Heps finish in 2009.

"I was very pleased with the effort the seniors came up with today. They really came up big," said men's distance coach Robert Johnson. "All three of them ran very strong races and it was great to see Nate and Matt finish higher at Regionals than they did at Heps. We'll keep our fingers crossed for Nate but this should give us some nice momentum heading into indoors."

Following the seniors was the future of Cornell cross-country: three sophomores and a freshman. Sophomore Matt McCullough sliced his way through the field as the race progressed to finish 70th in 31:41.1 in his finest collegiate cross-country race to date. Gabe Heck capped off an outstanding freshman campaign in 32:15.0, good for 105th place. Sophomores Bobby Micikas (32:35.3) and Brett Kelly (33:36.1) finished 126th and 178th, respectively.
