ONEONTA, NY (November 13, 3010) – All throughout the 2010 cross-country season, the Vassar College men's team has been improving and getting stronger in each race. The Brewers continued that trend by finishing 10th out of 39 teams at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday, the highest team finish since 2002 when Vassar finished 8th.
National power SUNY Geneseo won the meet with 47 points, edging out St. Lawrence with 55. Vassar had 313 points in its 10th place performance.
In the 8k race run at Fortin Park and hosted by SUNY Oneonta, the Brewers placed five runners in the top 85 amongst a field that 268 participants. Vassar's top finisher, sophomore
Sam Wagner finished 34th overall (25:57.2) and earned All-Atlantic Regional Honors as one of the top 35 finishers.
“Sam wasn't intimidated by the race and this race served as a great building point for him,” said head coach
James McCowan. "Both as a team and individually, our performances today helped our young men's team see what they are really capable of, and have given us an inspiration of what to work towards."
Junior
Zach Williams finished second for Vassar and 44th overall (26:12.7). He was followed by sophomore
Roni Teich (72nd/26:42.7) and junior #Justin Rupert (81st/26:49.7). Rounding out Vassars's five runner scoring contingent was junior
William Healy (82nd/26:50.5). Junior Evan Russeck was Vassar's sixth finisher (119/27:29.1) and senior
Jon Erickson rounded out the team in 165th (28:23.3).
“The men had a great race, our highest finish in eight years,” said McCowan. “This team got hungrier to improve throughout the season and showed it today. We return our entire top six running crew and the team looks forward to getting stronger and building through the track season for next fall.
