10/29/2010 3:06:11 PM

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- With senior Adrien Dannemiller leading the way, the Cornell men's cross country team finished fifth at the 2010 Heptagonal Championships on Friday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The Big Red finished with 126 points, eight points behind Penn for fourth place.

Dannemiller claimed first-team All-Ivy League honors with his seventh-place finish, posting a time of 24:39.4. He was followed by second-team All-Ivy League honoree Nate Edelman, who recorded a time of 24:56.4 for 14th place, and fellow senior Matt De Silva, coming in 29th in 25:24.5.

Cornell's two remaining scorers were freshman Gabe Heck in 37th place (25:34.1) and sophomore Matt McCullough in 39th place (25:37.5). Sophomores Robert Micikas and Brett Kelly were also among the top 50 finishers, taking 44th and 50th, respectively.

The Cornell men finished 5th on Friday at the cross country Heps at Van Cortlandt Park, scoring 126 points, just eight points behind a surprising Pennsylvania squad that placed four in the top-20. Princeton, currently ranked 18th in the national polls, won convincingly with 33 points, ahead of #34-ranked Dartmouth (55 points) and last year's champion #32 Columbia (94 points).

Princeton's Donn Cabral won the meet in a blistering 24:03.8 on the five-mile course, the 2nd-fastest time ever run at the Heps. Dan Chenoweth of Harvard, last year's individual champion, finished 2nd in 24:14.0. The Heps course was different for a fourth consecutive year due to a long-term construction project at Van Cortlandt Park. This year's course featured two 1200-meter loops on the infield before the course headed into the back hills and then cut back towards Cemetery Hill and the traditional finish line.
Senior Adrien Dannemiller led the Big Red charge in 7th place, running 24:39.4 and garnering first team All-Ivy accolades. Adrien's time is the fourth-fastest time ever run by a Cornellian at the Heps. Senior Nate Edelman (24:56.4) grabbed a spot on the All-Ivy second team in 14th place. Both seniors have each lead the team at two races so far this season. Matt De Silva (senior, 25:24.5) finished in 29th place and freshman Gabe Heck (38th, 25:34.1) was close behind. Sophomore Matt McCullough (41st, 25:37.5) returned to form at the perfect time to round out the scoring for Cornell. Battling health issues for much of the season, sophomore Bobby Micikas (25:44.9) ran well to finish 6th for the Big Red in 48th place. Leading the next pack was sophomore Brett Kelly (57th, 25:55.5), just ahead of senior Steve Soprano (61st, 25:59.4), freshman Dave Forward (68th, 26:09.1), and junior Chandler Kemp (71st, 26:14.5). Sophomore Nick Wade (87th, 26:42.3) and senior Tom Shouler (92nd, 27:35.7) wrapped up Cornell's contingent at this year's Heps.
In all, eight men ran their first Heps cross-country meet, including seniors Tom Shouler and Steve Soprano, a testament to their patience and dedication to the sport. Although the course layout was different from its traditional form, an astounding fourteen Heps men broke the 25-minute barrier, demonstrating the strength and depth of the Ivy League this year.
