ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Big Red cross country teams hosted the 24th annual John Reif Memorial Run at the Moakley Course on the Robert Trent Jones golf course at Cornell on Friday afternoon. Competing in breezy, low 40-degree weather, Cornell competed against runners from Syracuse, Cortland, Buffalo and Ithaca College.

The 5-mile race featured a dramatic battle in the gorge between Cornell's top runners. Sophomore Nick Wade and freshman Max Groves ran together through 4.5 miles before Wade turned on his 1:49 800-meter speed at the top of the hill to record the best Big Red time of the day in 26:40.2, good for 9th place overall. Groves finished 13th in 26:51.7, ahead of sophomore Andy Arnold (16th, 27:23.9).   Also in the top 20 for Cornell were sophomores David Frankel (18th, 27:30.9) and Dan Wallce (19th, 27:44.1).   Syracuse-affiliated runners took the first eight places, with Connor Stauffer (competing unattached) winning the race in 26:07.5.

Senior Kim Standridge, competing in her first cross country race in two years, won the women's 5K, cruising to victory by nearly twenty seconds in 18:40.3, the best time ever run by a Cornellian at the Reif. After four runners from Syracuse crossed the line, the Big Red took four of the next five places: junior Meghan Brown set a course PR of 19:15.6 for fifth overall, just in front of sophomore Neesha Schnepff who was sixth in 19:18.9, an improvement by over a minute from last year. Sophomore Suzana Markolovic was also over a minute faster than last year in placing ninth in 19:26.0 and freshman 800 runner Lauren Lloyd impressed with a tenth place finish, running 19:31.4. Cornell had several other runners in the top 20: sophomore Kate Rosettie was twelfth in 19:43.3, freshman Lauren Lapointe was thirteenth in 19:44.8, sophomore Alyssa O'Connor was fourteenth in 19:52.0 (over a minute better than last year), freshman Emmy Shearer was fifteenth in 19:55.7, freshman Elizabeth Simpson was sixteenth in 19:59.6 in her first race, senior Katie Sullivan was seventeenth in 20:03.1, freshman Dale Kinney was eighteenth in 20:11.7, freshman Rachel Sorna was nineteenth in 20:14.1 and junior Christine Smith was twentieth in 20:18.2.

Next up for Cornell is the cross country Heps, which will again be run at Van Cortlandt Park, on Friday, October 29th.  The women compete at 11:00 AM and the men at 11:45 AM.
