ALBANY, NY (October 16, 2010) – Running in an all-Division race heavily sprinkled with Division I teams at the University of Albany Invitational, the Vassar College men's cross country team distinguished itself with an 11th place finish out of 25 teams. Running with what associate head coach Ron Stonitsch called “strength and honor” the Brewers provided an effort that should reap benefits come the Liberty League Championships on October 30.

On a course made slow by soggy conditions and in the face of heavy winds, the Brewers were just five places beyond Division I Marist (sixth overall) and seven places better than Division III rival SUNY New Paltz.

Competing in the Gold Race, sophomore Sam Wagner finished 33rd overall in a field with 200 runners with a 26:16 time. Wagner was just one second behind New Paltz runner Joe Gentsch, who narrowly edged him out for top honors at the VC Invitational earlier this season.

“Today's performance was a testament to what we have been training for all season,” said Stonitsch. “We did quite well running with the big boys from Division I and Division II. Our men went out, got into position and held their own. It was an impressive day for our team.”

Vassar's second finisher in 48th place overall was junior #Zach Williams in 26:35. Fellow junior Justin Rupert finished in 61st (26:49), followed by junior William Healy in 70th (27:01) and junior Roni Teich in 80th (27:12).

The Brewers also fielded runners in the University of Albany Invitational Purple race. Freshman John Nguyen came in 52nd in 28:45.

Vassar will next compete in the Liberty League Championships hosted by William Smith/Hobart on October 30.
