Seven Brewers In Five Sports Earn Weekly Honors

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 11, 2010) -- The Liberty League bestowed weekly honors upon seven Brewers from five different programs Monday afternoon.

Ross Macklin
Ross Macklin, Junior, Men's Soccer Liberty League Co-Offensive Performer of the Week

Junior Ross Macklin accounted for both goals (1 goal, 1 assist) in a 2-1 win over Hobart and scored the game-tying penalty kick in a 2-1 loss Hamilton. Macklin's five points last weekend put him in a tie for the Liberty League lead with 6 points. He leads the Brewers with 13 points (4 goals, 5 assists). Mackiln's five assists this season put him in a tie for the 7th best single season assist total. This is Macklin's first Performer of the Week award to add to one Rookie of the Week award (10/27/08). A 2008 graduate of John Stark Regional High School (NH), Macklin lettered four years, was twice selected 1st Team All-State, and named captain his senior year.

Andrew Guzick
Andrew Guzick, Sophomore, Men's Tennis Liberty League Performer of the Week

Sophomore Andrew Guzick reached the semifinals of the Wallach Invitational last weekend, defeating Skidmore's Spencer Cheng in 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the second round and falling in a tight match 6-3, 1-6, (10-5) to Amherst's Sean Doerfler in the semis. Last Wednesday, Guzick won two matches to help Vassar to a 6-3 win over NYU in their first dual match of the season. Guzick teamed with his brother Ben to knock off Connor Witty and Bowen Xu 8-4 in doubles. Guzick outlasted Villanova transfer Witty 6-3, 7-64, 7-62. This is second straight weekly award and his second career Liberty League Performer of the Week award. Last weekend, Guzick won the ITA Northeast Regional Championship and will travel to Mobile, Alabama this Wednesday to compete against seven other regional winners in the ITA Small College Championships. Last year, Guzick was named name Liberty League Rookie of the Week eight times and won the Liberty League Rookie of the Year. A 2009 graduate of the Harley School (NY), Guzick was a five-year letter winner in tennis. He was named Finger Lakes All-League his sophomore through senior year and selected to the All Greater Rochester team as a junior and senior. At Harley, his team was ranked No. 10 in the nation his senior year and No. 7 his junior year.

Jennifer Beckerman HS
Jennifer Beckerman, Junior, Women's Tennis Liberty League Performer of the Week

Vassar's No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles player junior Jennifer Beckerman went 6-0 in three dual matches wins for Vassar last week, 8-1 over New Paltz, 9-0 over RPI, and 9-0 over Union. In doubles with Nicole Block, they never lost more than three games in their three pro sets. In singles, Beckerman did not lose a set. A two-time Liberty League All-Conference Singles selection and Liberty League Rookie of the Year, this is her second straight Performer of the Week award and third overall. A 2008 graduate of Santa Barbara High School (CA), Beckerman lettered in tennis three years. She played No. 2 singles in her junior and senior season. Beckerman was named First Team Channel League and reached the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) finals in 2006 and the semifinals in 2007.

Lindsay Kantor
Lindsay Kantor, Freshman, Women's Tennis Liberty League Rookie of the Week

Vassar's No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles player freshman Linsay Kantor went 6-0 in three dual matches wins for Vassar last week, 8-1 over New Paltz, 9-0 over RPI, and 9-0 over Union. In doubles with Jen Ruther, they never lost more than two games in their three pro sets. She defeated RPI's Meghan Olson 6-1, 6-1. This is Kantor's first weekly award. A 2010 graduate Westhampton Beach High School (NY), Kantor was a four time League Doubles Champion and part of the No. 2 doubles team in the State as a Suffolk County Doubles Champion her senior year.


Johanna Spangler HS
Johanna Spangler, Junior, Women's Cross Country Liberty League Co-Performer of the Week

Leading from start to finish, Junior Johanna Spangler won the James Early Invitational 5k race. She bested the 311 runner field with an 18:29.55 performance, a 5:57.2 per mile pace. Spangler's efforts led the Brewers to a convincing team championship over 30 other teams, defeating their closest opponent by 35 points. It was Spangler's second individual victory following her first place finish at the season-opening VC Invitational. This is Spangler's seventh Performer of the Week award, her second this season. A two-year cross country letter-winner, Spangler graduated from Gettysburg Area High School (PA) in 2008 where she was 10th in the Mid-Penn Conference in 2007, as well as placing 27th in District 3 and 58th in the state. In her junior and senior years, her team won the Division Championships.

Aubree Piepmeier
Aubree Piepmeier, Freshman, Women's Cross Country Liberty League Rookie of the Week

Freshman Aubree Piepmeier continued her stellar freshman season by finishing third overall (Vassar's second runner) at the James Early Invitational. In a field with 311 runners and 31 teams, Piepmeier finished in 18:53.86 and helped lead the Brewers to the team championship. On the season, it was her third top three finish following the VC Invite and Paul Short Meet. This is Piepmeier's second weekly award. A 2010 graduate of Franklin High School (MA), Piepmeier lettered three years in and also competed in indoor and outdoor track and field and captained all three teams as a senior. As a junior, she won the Hockamock League Indoor 1000m event.

Maggie Brelis
Maggie Brelis, Freshman, Field Hockey Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week

In a 2-1 shootout loss to Union, freshman #MaggieBrelis# tied a Liberty League season best with 18 saves. In setting a new career-high for saves, the freshman tender faced 43 Union shots, the most by any team in the Liberty League this season. Brelis made nine of her saves in the two overtime periods that kept the score 1-1 and led to two shootout periods. A 2010 graduate of  Buckingham Browne & Nichols, Brelis lettered three years in field hockey.
