Depth & Consistency Leads Men's XC to Championship at James Early Invitational

Meet Results

WESTFIELD, MA (October 9, 2010) – Depth and consistency remain the hallmarks of the Vassar College men's cross country team, and it was never more apparent than in today's James Early Invitational hosted by Westfield State College. Behind strong performances from the entire roster, Vassar captured the championship in a field that featured 26 teams.

With 75 points, the Brewers, better a second place finish in 2008, the last time Vassar ran the 5 mile race. Westfield State finished in second (122 points), followed by Trinity (126), Bridgewater State (129) and SUNY Delhi (211).

Vassar's top five runners were only separated by 50 seconds, prompting head coach James McCowan to offer, “Our guys are doing a good job with depth and running together. If one of our guys is having an off day, another guy is able to step up and contribute.

Sophomore Sam Wagner led the Vassar brigade of runners, finishing first for the Brewers and 7th overall with a 26:22 time. “Sam really took charge today and put himself on the line,” said McCowan. “He ran an extremely tough and gutsy race.”

Junior Justin Rupert, who finished 29th overall in 2008, was Vassar's second finisher and 14th overall (26:43). “Simply said, this was a good race for Justin,” said McCowan.

Junior William Healy finished in 19th place (27:03) in what McCowan termed was an assertive effort. Junior Zach Williams, who led Vassar in last weeks Paul Short Meet was fourth for the Brewers and 20th overall (27:06). Junior Roni Teich rounded out Vassar's scoring with a 25th overall finish (27:11). Junior Evan Russeck was Vassar's sixth finisher (27:35) and 32nd overall and sophomore Christopher Lloyd finished seven for VC, in 43rd overall (28:00).

The Brewers will next race at the all-division Albany Invitational on Saturday, October 16.
