JAMESVILLE, N.Y.
– The Syracuse University men and women's cross country teams opened the 2010 season in winning fashion as each captured a first-place finish at the BIG EAST Preview. The meet, which was hosted by Syracuse at Jamesville Beach Park, was the first home meet for the Orange since the 2004 season.

Many SU student-athletes turned in strong performances at today's meet, including junior Steve Weeks and sophomore Sarah Pagano. Both runners were SU's top finishers and took second place in their respective races. Weeks crossed the finish line of the men's 6k race at 18:22.7, while Pagano finished the women's 5k event with a time of 18:48.4. The Orange finished with four runners in the top 10 spots in both races.

"We had Steven Weeks and Steve Murdock both run really nice races for us, said head coach Chris Fox. "Those two did a great job, as well as Roman Acosta. I expect by the conference meet they should be able to run pretty close to the DePaul kid that won today."

"On the women's side, we were really happy with Sarah Pagano, Ari Kasprowicz, Carly Hamond and Ashley Smolinka. It was a great race for all of them. It was big step up for Sarah and she beat some really good girls, as did Ari and Carly. Overall, were pleased."

The meet, which included five other BIG EAST teams, gave runners a chance to experience the course at Jamesville Beach Park and prepare for the BIG EAST Championship. Connecticut, DePaul, Seton Hall, South Florida and West Virginia were among those who represented the BIG EAST. The BIG EAST Championship will also be hosted by Syracuse on the same course on October 30.

Up next, the Orange will travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to compete in the Colgate Invitational on Saturday, September 18 at 10 a.m.
