Cross Country Announces 16 Newcomers

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University cross country head coach Chris Fox announced that 16 student-athletes will join the program for the 2010 season.

Brandon Freyer         Brewster N.Y./ Pawling
Freyer was named a second-team all-northeast member in 2008. He was a Nike Indoor Nationals 5K All- American and a NYS Class C champion in 2009. Freyer qualified for the 2009 Nike Cross Nationals invitational meet. His personal-best time for the 5,000m is 14:49.62.

Reed Kamyszek         Grand Rapids, Mich./Kenowa Hills High School
Kenowa Hills' Kamyszek is a four-time all-conference track and cross country honoree. He was a three-time cross country and track regional champion. Kamyszek was invited to the 2007 Nike Indoor Nationals All-American Freshman Mile. He was named to the all-state cross country team three times and the all-state track team twice. Kamyszek was a Division II 2008 cross country state champion. In 2009 and 2010, he was the Division I 3,200m state champion. He was selected to the MITS All-State team three times and was the 2010 MITS 3,200m state champion. He recorded a time of 4:16.2 in the 1,600m and his best 3,200m time was 9:05.59.

Sam Macaluso         West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South
Macaluso is the 2010 New Jersey Group III Indoor champion in the 1,600m. He was named to the 2009 all-state cross country second team. He earned runner-up at the 2010 New Jersey Meet of Champions in the 1,600m and competed in the Millrose Games mile. His best 1,600m time is 4:10:84 and he recorded a 9:09.27 3,200m finish.

Justin Murray         West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford
Murray is a four-time All- Founders League champion and a four-time All-NEPSTA cross country honoree. He was the NEPSTA New England champion in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m. His top mile time is 4:17.91.

Andrew Nelson         Geneva, Ill./Geneva High School/University of Northern Iowa
At Geneva High School, Nelson was a nine-time all-conference and five-time all-state selection. He was a member of the 3A outdoor 4x800 runner-up and 3A indoor 1,600m runner-up teams. While at the University of Northern Iowa, Nelson won the indoor DMR conference championship. His personal best times include a 4:07.79 in the 1,600m and 9:16.59 in the 3,200m event.

Dave Oster         Verona, N.J./Verona High School
Verona's Oster was a 2009 all-state cross country first team selection. In 2009, he was named to the All-America cross country third team and earned 15th place at the 2009 Footlocker Nationals. He holds county and state records, including the state sectional meet mark in the 3,200m. He earned seven Group One state titles in the 1,600m and 3,200m as well as six all-county honors. Oster's personal best times include, a 9:09.67 in the 3,200m, 4:15.66 in the 1,600m and 15:07.07 in the 5,000m.

Andrew Palmer         Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman High School
Palmer was the 4A state cross country champion in 2007 and 2009 and the runner-up in 2008. He also won the 2010 4A state championship in the 3,200m. In 2008 and 2009, he was a Nike Cross Nationals individual qualifier. He earned all-state honors in indoor and outdoor track and cross country 14 times. Palmer earned All-America status at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in the 5K. His fastest mile time is 4:17.00, his top 3,200m time is 9:11.64, and his time of 14:49.97 in the 5,000m is also a personal best.

Jonathan Squeri         Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North
Squeri was a two-year team captain in cross country and track. In 2008, he was a member of the New Jersey MOC and northeast region champion cross country team. During that same season, his team took fifth place at the Nike Cross Nationals. In 2009, Squeri was a Mercer County individual champion, a third-team all-state selection, and a member of the first-team all-Group 3 team. He was a three-time all-county selection and most recently in 2010, he took eighth place in the 3,200m at the New Jersey MOC. His top times include 4:21.93 in the 1,600m, 9:16.38 in the 3,200m, and 15:16.91 in the 5,000m event.

Connor Stauffer         Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow High School
Stauffer earned all-SWC, all-state and all-New England honors in track and cross country. His best 3,200m time is 9:03.86, his fastest 5,000m time is 15:24.26, and he ran his top 2,000m Steeplechase in 6:02.50.

Max Straneva         Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley High School
Straneva was the New York state cross country Class C runner-up in 2009 and champion in 2008. He was the Federation runner-up in 2008 and champion in 2009. Straneva qualified twice for the Nike Cross Nationals. He was the Division II runner-up in the NY State Outdoor 1,600m and took third place in the 3,200m. His best 1,600m time is 4:14.59, he notched a 9:10.91 3,200m finish, and ran the 5,000m in 15:04.93.

David Wilson         Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg High School
Wilson was the Maryland 1A cross country state champion in 2009, the 2010 indoor 3,200m champion and the 2010 outdoor 3,200m champion. He holds the Maryland 1A indoor 3,200m and outdoor 3,200m records. In 2009 he was an all-state cross country first-team selection. His best 1,600m time is 4:21.52, his fastest 3,200m time is 9:23.64 and his top 3K time is 8:48.25.

Alexandra Clinton         Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey High School
Clinton was named to the all-county first team five times. In 2008 and 2009, she made the all-state Group 2 cross country first team. Clinton was named to the all-state cross country third team as well. Her best 1,600m time is 5:05.76 while her fastest 3,200m time was 10:55.56.

Julie Jablonski         Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central High School
Jablonski was named to the all-county team 10 times for cross country and indoor/outdoor track. She was selected to the all-state cross country second team in 2008. Her Valley Central High School team won 12 team sectional/state titles. Jablonski was the county and sectional champion in the 3,200m (2008-09 indoor track) and county champion in 1,600m and 3,200m (2010 outdoor track). Her best 1,500m time was 4:41.30, her fastest 1,600m time was 4:57.82, and she recorded a time of 10:47:23 in the 3,200m.

Molly Malone         Fayetteville, N.Y./ Fayetteville-Manlius High School
Malone's Fayetteville-Manlius team was the four-time Nike Cross National and New York state team champions. In 2009, her team finished as runners up at the New York state meet. She was part of the outdoor 4x800 New Balance National championship and the 4x800 New York state runner-up teams. She finished in fourth-place in the 1,500m at the 2009 New York state meet. She earned fifth place in the 1,000m and second place in the 4x800 at the 2008 indoor New York state meet. She recorded a personal best time of 4:30.7 in the 1,500m, a 2:07.7 in the 800m, and 58.9 in the 400m events.

Ashley Smolinka         Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough High School
Smolinka was a 2008 and 2009 first-team all-state cross country honoree. She was the team's top runner when Hillsborough won the state championship in 2009. She was the 2009 runner-up at Nike Cross Northeast Regionals and competed at Nike Nationals. In 2008 and 2009 she was named the Somerset County Runner of the Year. Smolinka is a four-year cross country team MVP. She qualified for nationals in four consecutive years. She is the school record holder for the 3,200m, the 4x mile relay and all cross country courses. She ran the 1,600m event in 5:02.42 and the 3,200m in 10:43.93.

Brenna Symoniak         Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central High School
Symoniak is a six-time section champion and four-time league champion. In 2007, she was selected to the all-state cross country first team. She was the 2008 Class B cross country state champion and participated in the 2009 Nike Indoor Nationals 3,200m event. Her personal best times include a 4:44.28 in the 1,500m and 10:06.14 in the 3,000m event.
