Miriam Khan of CNJ wins Div III 100

Neely Spence of Shippensburg defended her national championship at the NCAA Division II nationals over the weekend in Charlotte, N.C., turning back a challenge from a hometown runner, Tanya Zeferjahn of Queens University of Charlotte, 16:14.23-16:20.56. Zeferjahn, a 25-year-old graduate student from California, had won the 10,000 earlier in the meet. Spence, the daughter of the former Olympic marathoner Steve Spence, won the New Balance Collegiate Invitational 5,000 this past February.
In the Div. III nationals in Berea, Ohio, Miriam Khan of The College of New Jersey win the women’s 100 meters, running 11.67w. In the men’s meet, Alex Eaton of Thiel College won the 400, in 46.79, turning back Dan Dunkleberger, of Gwynedd-Mercy, who was 2nd in 47.00.
Other national Div. III national champions from the Northeast were Kristen Bates of Messiah College, 1st in the 100 hurdles in 13.83; Alyssa Pirinelli of St. Lawrence, upstate New York, 47-7 in the shot put; Anna Heim, Moravian, 13-6 ½ for a meet record in the pole vault; Frank Guarino of SUNY Fredonia, 1,500 in 3:50, and Eric Woodruff of Moravian, 21.04 in the 200 after setting the meet record of 20.85 in the prelims.
In the women’s heptathlon, Emma Dewart of Ithaca College no-marked in the javelin throw, while leading in the scoring, and withdrew from the competition.
Khan, a junior from Hopewell Valley, N.J., also ran a leg on TCNJ’s 7th-place 4x1 team. The team finished 8th in the women’s team scoring with 27 points. Illinois Wesleyan was 1st with 50.
Jianna Spadacinni and Meryl Wimberley of TCNJ were 2-4 in the 800. Spadacinni ran 2:08.05, losing to Marie Borner of Bethel (Minn.), who ran 2:06.87 and also won the 1,500.
Bates, a senior from West Perry H.S. in Pennsylvania, was also indoor Div. III champion this year in the hurdles and pentathlon. She also placed 6th here in the triple jump.
Heim, a senior from Moorestown, N.J., was also the reigning indoor and outdoor national champion.
In the men’s meet, Woodruff was 1st in the 200 and 4th in the 100 (10.59). Dunkleberger also placed 3rd in the 200, running 21.30. Max Orenstein of Ithaca was 5th in each sprint as well, 10.72/21.61.
North Central College of Illinois won the men’s team championship, with 53 points. Other regional scorers:
