Track Teams In Solid Standing For Sunday's Heps Finish

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Cornell men's and women's track and field teams are both in solid shape after day one of competition at the 2010 Outdoor Heptagonal Championships at Princeton. The men's team, trying to become the first team, men's or women's, to win eight straight championships, are in first place, while the women's team is in third place after day one. In addition, both the Cornell men and women lead the way in qualifiers to Sunday's day of action.

The Cornell men hold a slim lead over host Princeton, 35-33, after the first day of action. The Big Red also qualified 15 athletes to Sunday, while Penn, which ended day one in seventh place with eight points, had the second-highest number of qualifiers with12. Princeton advanced eight athletes to Sunday's finals.

The Big Red men got the vast majority of their points on Saturday in the long jump and the pole vault. Cornell collected 18 points in the long jump, with Josh Kirkpatrick taking home the championship with a leap of 24-9. Duane Teixeira was third and Chase Aaronson took fifth. In the pole vault, the Big Red picked up 12 points behind a second-place finish from Rick Zamora and a fourth-place showing from Jason Inzana.

The Big Red's five other points on the day all came in the 10,000m, as Adrien Dannemiller took fourth and Nate Edelman was sixth in the meet's longest event.

On the women's side of the meet, the Big Red is in third, six points behind meet-leading Princeton and four and a half behind second-place Brown. Still, Cornell is in solid shape heading into Sunday's finals, as the Big Red women advanced a meet-best 16 athletes to Sunday. Princeton managed to push just five athletes through, while Brown has just three qualifiers for the finals.

Cornell picked up at least 10 points in three different events on Saturday, boosted by a win in the long jump by Melissa Hewitt and a win in the javelin by freshman Victoria Imbesi. In the pole vault, Cornell picked up 11.5 points behind a second-place finish from Natalie Gengel and a tie for sixth by Claire Dishong. The Big Red also got a fourth-place finish from Katie Kellner in the 10,000m to add four more points to the team's total.

Sunday's action gets underway at 11 a.m. with the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon resuming action. The meet should wrap up around 5:30 p.m. with the men's 4x400m relay.
