Cornell returns to action with the Penn Relays next week, also squaring off on Sunday in the Big Red Invitational at the Kane Athletic Complex.
Competing on an unusually cold and blustery April day at the Robert J. Kane Sports Complex at Cornell on Saturday, the Big Red women's track team defeated the University of Pennsylvania 111.5 to 50.5, winning 15 of 19 events. Led by double event wins from sophomore
Melissa Hewitt (100 and 200) and freshman
Victoria Imbesi (javelin and shot put), Cornell also swept both relays. With temperatures barely reaching the mid-40s and with stiff winds (and some mixed precipitation thrown into the mix as well) throughout the day, this was a classic dual meet defined by great head-to-head competition. In spite of the conditions, six new track records were set, including four by Cornellians. In addition, the Big Red had had 14 ECAC qualifiers; more importantly the team had 35 scoring performances.
Cornell swept the throwing events. Imbesi led the way in winning a close javelin competition, reaching 132-6. She then came back to win the shot put in an ECAC-qualifying 45- 2 1/2, also #6 all-time at Cornell. Junior Cassie Schweighofer was also busy, winning the discus at 149-1, an ECAC qualifier, while also taking third in the shot at 42-5 1/2 and second in the hammer at 150-5. The hammer was won by sophomore
Erin Rossi, who did a nice job in reaching 152-11.
Senior
Natalie Gengel had a terrific day to win the pole vault in a seasonal best 13-1 1/2, another ECAC qualifier. Freshman Lindsay Patterson was second at 11-7 3/4 while sophomore Sam Brady tied for third at 11-1 3/4. The Big Red also won the triple jump, as sophomore
Kristin Brandt produced a great series of jumps, with a best of 39-7 1/4, an ECAC qualifier, to place first. Junior Kim Lienhoop was third in the event with a mark of 39-3; she was also third in the long jump at 18-7 1/4. In addition to Hewitt's wins on the track, she was also second in the long jump, reaching 18-8 1/2. The Big Red's other field points came from freshman
Ailish Hanly, who cleared 5-1 1/4 to get second in the high jump.
Cornell had similar success on the track. Things got off to a great start in the 3000 steeplechase, as Cornell took the top three spots. Senior
Erin Roberts lowered her own track record, yet again bettering the ECAC standard, with a run of 10:39.24. Junior
Maura Carroll had a seasonal best 10:57.51 for second and senior
Stephanie Pancoast ran 11:09.04 for third. Next up was the 4X100 and the quartet of junior
Mecha Santos, Hewitt, senior
Megan Williams and senior
Krystal Williams set a new track record of 45.94, also #3 all-time at Cornell. In the 1500, senior
Kerri Lyons ran a very good race to finish ahead of a fine effort from Penn senior Anna Aagenes; Lyons ran 4:30.31 for first and a new track record. Classmate
Caroline Heidt was third in 4:40.55. The 100 hurdles was a very exciting race and sophomore
Danielle Silas won by .01, crossing the line in a seasonal best 14.50; junior
Lauren Tanz was third in 14.76. In the 400, senior Kate Backel continued her outstanding season by blazing to the victory, crossing the line in an ECAC-qualifying 55.70, just off the track record; classmate
Megan Williams was third in 56.42. After Backel's win in the 400, Hewitt continued her busy day by cruising to victory in the 100 in 11.92; junior
Mecha Santos added a second place run of 12.02, an ECAC qualifier (#6 all-time) as Cornell picked up 8 points. Penn senior Jamie Masarelli ran a fine race to win the 800 in a new track record of 2:09.25; junior Kim Standridge ran well to get second in an ECAC-qualifying 2:11.08 and sophomore
Molly Glantz was third in 2:12.93. Senior Jess Weyman continued the assault on the track records with a great performance in the 400 hurdles, crossing the line first in 60.24 to break her own stadium record and again better the ECAC standard. Freshman
Mari Giurastante was third in 63.02. Next up was the 200, and Hewitt finished up her busy day with her fifth event and third win and second individual victory, as she cruised to victory in the 200 at 24.85. Santos was third in 25.48. In the 5000, Penn freshman Leslie Kovachs ran a new track record of 16:59.18 while Cornell freshmen
Kelsey Karys and
Genna Hartung also dipped under the old track record in placing second and third in 17:12.86 and 17:20.35, respectively, as Karys also claimed an ECAC qualifier. The meet concluded with the 4X400, as the Big Red placed first in an ECAC-qualifying 3:48.04 behind legs from
Libby O'Brien,
Megan Williams, Backel and Weyman.
