SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Uhunoma Osazuwa was named the BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week after earning the highest point total by a collegian in the heptathlon at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. on April 8. Her NCAA provisional-qualifying total of 5,378 points was not only a career high, but also is the fourth-best tally in the NCAA this season. It is also the top mark in the BIG EAST in 2010, outscoring the second-place total by 689 points.
The Las Vegas product set season bests in the 100-meter hurdles (13.89) and high jump (1.75) and went on to win the high jump and long jump (5.88m) at one of the top multi-event competitions of the season. Osazuwa went into the final day with a slim first-place lead before finishing second overall to former heptathlon All-American Tammilee Kerr (2008) from Iowa.
During the indoor season, Osazuwa became SU's first All-American pentathlete after placing sixth at the NCAA Track & Field Indoor Championship with 4,061 points. In just her first trip to the NCAA Indoor Championship, she became Syracuse's first indoor All-American in eight years and joined just 13 former Orange athletes who have earned the prestigious honor.
Osazuwa will compete at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. beginning April 22.
