We'll get a better idea of what the landscape of the boys' State is next weekend, but the fact that we're two weeks out from the end of the Season and we still can't say with certainty who to look out for, should speak for itself.
Before last weekend, we would have been safe in calling the State a dead heat between five teams. But then Brighton showed up at the Monroe County Champs, and put together an impressive showing. They beat a good Fairport team by 40 points, and showed a big improvement since McQuaid, where they were essentially even with Corning.
Corning, North Rockland, and East Aurora have all made NXN before in at least one gender, and make up the nucleus of that former dead heat. East Aurora is in very good position for next year, as four of their five runners are underclassmen, including three sophomores leading the charge. North Rockland has a strong 1-2 punch, and Corning has the experience of numerous State Titles in the last decade.
Ward Melville was the Pre-State Champion both last year and this year. It didn't aid them much when it came to States, but last year was about gaining experience on what Queensbury would be like in November. They are just as capable now as they were in September.
Then there are the Dark Horses. Chaminade has been missing their top runner since the Bowdoin Classic. Swap him back in, and they jump to 145 points, a clear second. And who could forget Monroe-Woodbury coming in as almost unseeded last year, then winning the whole show?
Individually, we are sure to find our World Series tie-breaker between Ryan Sykes and Owen Conley. Both have a win to their name at Queensbury. Thomas Isenovski has been close enough to be able to play spoiler, and Ben Berman will be added into the mix at Bowdoin.
