HANOVER, N.H. -- Cornell senior
Duane Teixeira was named the most valuable perfomer of the meet as the Cornell men's track and field team finished second at the 2010 Indoor Heptagonal Championships, hosted by Dartmouth. Cornell finished with 149 points, 32 points behind champion Princeton but 94 points ahead of third-place Dartmouth.
Teixeira posted the top four jumps in the championship in both the long jump and the triple jump, winning both to gain Most Outstanding Perfomer honors for the second straight Heptagonal Championship after claiming the honor outdoors last spring. He won the long jump with a leap of 24-10, the best indoor championship mark in 20 years, while claiming the triple jump with an effort of 50-4 3/4.
Teixeira continued Cornell's stranglehold on the long jump, winning the fourth straight title by a Cornell athlete and his second straight. His effort in that event was the second-longest leap in school history, trailing only the legendary Meredith Gourdine's effort of 25-1 3/4 in 1951.
Senior Josh Kirkpatrick was the only other event winner on the weekend for the Big Red men, claiming the heptathlon with 5,160 points, the second-highest total in school history and only the second Cornell athlete to to the 5,000 point barrier. Kirkpatrick is also the first Cornell athlete to claim a Heptagonal title in that event.

HANOVER, N.H. -- It was an exciting final weekend in February as the Ivy schools met to contest the Indoor Heptagonal Championships, this time at Dartmouth's Leverone Fieldhouse in Hanover, N.H. In front of a spirited crowd, both the Cornell men and women put together very good performances as the men finished second to a very strong Princeton team and the women placed third in a tightly contested team race, finishing behind Princeton and Columbia. Although it was the first time since 2001at a track Heps that neither Cornell team claimed a team championship, the Cornell squads displayed very good strength and resolve across all of the events and had very good meets.
The men were led by the Meet MVP, senior co-captain
Duane Teixeira, who won the long jump in the farthest jump at the Heps in 20 years (24-10) and who also placed first in the triple jump (50-4 1/4). In addition, senior co-captain Josh Kirkpatrick claimed first in the heptathlon, running 7.00 in the 60, jumping 22-3 3/4 in the long jump, reaching 46-2 1/2 in the shot put, leaping 5-11 1/4 in the high jump, running 8.63 in the 60 hurdles, clearing 14-0 3/4 in the pole vault and crossing the line in 2:47.13 in the 1000. His 5,160 points is the second best performance in school history. While competing in the multi, Kirkpatrick also managed to squeeze in a fourth place finish in the open long jump, reaching 23-5 1/4 on Saturday. The Cornell men also produced several runner-up, All-Ivy performances. Senior
Charlie Hatch got Sunday's track final started for Cornell with a gritty second place finish in the mile, running 4:08.44. Two other All-Ivy showings came from freshmen:
Bruno Hortelano-Roig ran 6.87 (#3 all-time at Cornell) in the 60 (another freshman,
Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom was fourth in 6.93) and classmate
Nick Wade ran 1:52.40 in the 800 as each was barely defeated at the finish line in their first Heps. Wade teamed up with junior
Aaron Anderson (1:55.9), freshman Will McFall (1:54.1), junior Tommy Roy (1:53.5) to anchor the 4X800 in 1:54.0 as the squad ran 7:38.16 to place second. The 4X400 of sophomore
Kenny McClain, sophomore
Brian Freitas, senior Mike Kippins and sophomore
Cody Boyd ran 3:17.58 to also earn runner-up honors. Last but not least, sophomore Danny Hagberg ran 8.23 to place second in the 60 hurdles. In addition to these All-Ivy accolades, the Big Red men tallied 34 IC4A qualifying performances and had six alterations to the all-time top 10 lists on the weekend and more importantly had 29 different scoring performances as the team totaled 149 points, behind only the 181 from Princeton. Third place Dartmouth had 55; the match-up between the Princeton and Cornell men was so high-powered that those two teams out-pointed the rest of the League combined. Although a small consolation, the Big Red's total is tied for the second most points ever for a second place team at the indoor Heps.
There were a number of other scoring efforts besides the team's All-Ivy showings. On Saturday, senior Rick Zamora was sixth in 15-9 in the vault and classmate
Owen Kimple was fourth in a tactical 3K at 8:35.53; junior Nate Edelman was sixth in 8:38.38. Sophomore
Bob Belden threw big in the shot, placing fourth in 54-9 1/4. He came back on Sunday to grab fourth in the weight throw, reaching 59-0 1/4. Also in the field on Sunday, sophomore
Chris Arlinghaus cleared 6-9 1/2 for the second straight week to place third in the high jump while senior
Jay Pierce was fourth at 6-8 1/4. In addition to Teixeira's triple jump win, senior
