Track and Field to Compete in NEC Championships

Sophomore Thomas Iannacone and Junior Mishelle McNamara
Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field teams are scheduled to compete in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Indoor Championships this weekend at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, MD. In addition to Wagner College, the event will include athletes from Bryant, Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Mount St. Mary's, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis (PA), and St. Francis (NY).

During the winter season, the Seahawks registered five top-five NEC finishes. Among them are Mishelle McNamara (West Covina, CA/West Covina) in the Pole Vault, senior Amanda Gland (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) in the Long Jump and Triple Jump, sophomore Sheena Taylor (Twinsburg, OH/Detriot Mercy) in the Weight Throw, and the Men's Distance Medley Relay team.

Three of Wagner College's all-time Indoor records fell this season. For the men, senior James Johnston (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) broke a nine-year-old mark in the 1000 meter dash with a 2:31.34 finish. Three weeks later, Johnston teamed with junior Derek Schultz (Ocean Port, NJ/Shore Regional), senior Kevin Kearney (Haddonfield, NJ/St. Joe's Prep), and sophomore Thomas Iannacone (Havertown, PA/St. Joe's Prep) to record a 10:13.64 finish in the Distance Medley Relay. The time was nearly seven seconds better than the previous mark of 10:20.09 set 29 years ago and qualified them for the IC4A Championships on March 6th in Boston, MA.

For the women, Gland claimed the College's top-spot with an 11.57-meter leap in the Triple Jump. Like Gland, Taylor also made a huge impact this season. She owns the Conference's third-best distance in the Weight Throw at 16.64 meters – just inches off of Wagner's all-time mark of 16.71 meters set in 2006. Taylor will also take part in the ECAC Championships on March 6th in Boston, MA.

All first place finishers at the NEC Championships are automatically qualified for the IC4A (men) and ECAC (women) Championships.
