Future Stars: Sophia Chromczak of Bethlehem

The beauty of High School sports is that there is always a new face ready to debut. Seniors graduate, and new athletes come in to take their place. Each week, we take a look at one of the names that are here to stay over the next few years, as they take on the veterans of our Sport.

Sophia Chromczak (Bethlehem) may be a new name for some. But both the modified and club scenes have seen this one coming for a while.

Her start in the sport came competing for Delmar Track Club, a feeder program for the Bethlehem High School Track & Field team. Dating back to 2nd Grade, Chromczak had been competing at the USATF club level, showing promise. Once on Modified in 7th grade, she won the Suburban Council race by over 30-seconds at SPAC. Flash forward a year later, now an 8th grader, and she's leading the top team in the State.

Bethlehem is no stranger to younger athletes. Last year, Tess McNamara and Sidney Graham both competed for Bethlehem as 8th Graders. It helped them secure a berth to NXN, and an 11th place finish. One year later, McNamara and Graham are now freshmen, and it's Chromczak leading the charge.

Chromczak took second overall at Bowdoin Park on Saturday, running 18:50.1 and leading her team to a decisive win with 25-second compression. Her time ranks as the faster than any Junior or Freshman has run so far this year. She joined her team a few days later to best NY #2 Shenendehowa in a dual meet back in Section 2. They will next race at the Manhattan Invitational.
