Jones Wins Triple Jump At Sykes-Sabock Challenge

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Cornell men's track and field team had solid performances across the board and finished third out of twelve teams at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup, held on Friday and Saturday at Penn State.  The Big Red produced an event win and four second place finishes, had 13 IC4A qualifiers and also had four changes to the all-time top 10 lists in scoring 80 points, placing behind Princeton (107) and Penn State (83).
Senior Gary Jones and senior co-captain Duane Teixeira impressed again in going 1-2 in the triple jump, with Jones reaching 49-9 and Teixeira leaping and bounding to 49-5 1/4 as both easily eclipsed the IC4A standard.  Sophomore Bob Belden also had a good weekend:  he was third on Friday evening in the weight throw, with a heave of 58-5 3/4 and earned his second IC4A qualifier of the weekend with a 10th place 52-5 1/2 in the shot put on Saturday.  Senior Damian Silverstrim was eighth in the weight, bettering the IC4A standard with a throw of 55-10 1/4.  Senior Jason Inzana again reached the IC4As, clearing 15-9 for fifth in the pole vault.  Sophomore Vince Formica was fourth in the long jump at 22-6 1/4 while classmate Chris Arlinghaus was eighth in the high jump at 6-6 1/4.
Friday night on the track, sophomore Dan Hagberg impressed with a runner-up 8.15 in the 60 hurdles, the #3 time in school history and well under the IC4A qualifying time.  In the 60, freshman Bruno Hortelano-Roig just missed the final with an IC4A-qualifying 6.94; sophomore Chase Aaronson produced the #10 time in school history with an 11th place 7.00.  On Saturday, senior Owen Kimple ran a terrific 3000 meters, placing second in 8:12.06, the #9 time in school history.  Junior Drew Hart had a good race as well, placing ninth in a personal best 8:27.61, just missing the IC4A standard.  The Big Red displayed impressive depth in the 400 as sophomore Ken McClain placed second in 48.06, the #3 time in school history, and was followed closely by classmate Nick Huber (3rd, 48.54) and junior Cody Boyd (6th, 48.95); all three were under the IC4A standard.  Sophomore Dan Thomas also ran well, crossing the line in 49.52 for eleventh.  In the mile, junior Aaron Anderson ran a personal best 4:14.64 to place fifth and qualify for the IC4As while freshman Kevin Johnson was eighth in 4:19.05 and senior Pete Loy was eleventh in 4:24.52.  The Big Red had no scorers in the 800 but picked up a pair of IC4A qualifiers as freshmen David McCuiston ran 1:54.67 for eleventh and Will McFall ran 1:54.73 for twelfth; classmate Andy Arnold just missed the Eastern standard in placing 15th in 1:55.19.  There were two other scoring performances on the track as senior Brad Bogdan was sixth in the 5K on Friday night with a time of 14:58.43 while sophomore Brian Freitas was fifth, running 1:20.96, in the 600 on Saturday.  
Other top fifteen showings came from freshman Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom in the 60 (13th, 7.01), freshman Ben Moody in the 60 hurdles (12th, 8.50), freshman Jourdan White in the high jump (12th, 6-4 1/4), senior Rick Zamora in the pole vault (9th, 14-9) and Huber in the long jump (10th, 21-7 1/4).

Next up for Cornell is a pair of meets.  The team will compete at the Virginia Duals at the Armory in New York City on Saturday night, February 13th and the Big Red will also host the Robert J. Kane Invitational in Barton Hall on Friday and Saturday, February 12-13th.
