NEW HAVEN, Conn. (2/5/10)
- The Colgate University women's track and field team set a new school record in the Distance Medley Relay at the annual Giegengack Invitational on Friday night.

Sophomore Chelsea Burns (Seattle, Wash.), junior Michele Miller (Silver Spring, Md.), senior Ashley Niness (Berwyn, Pa.) and sophomore Elise DeRoo (Newtown, Conn.) shattered the school record in the DMR with an ECAC qualifying time of 11:53.72. The previous record was 12:00.95 set in 1998. The Raiders record time is the best in the Patriot league this season.

Burns led off the relay with the 1200-meter leg, she was able to stay in the front of the pack finishing in about 3:40, and passed the baton to Miller, who ran her stretch of 400 meters in 57.9. Next was Niness, who finished the 800-meter leg in approximately 2:15, helping the Raiders gain ground on the pack. DeRoo finished off the relay with the longest stretch: the 1600-meter leg, running a strong finish time of 4:59, to bring the team's time to a record 11:53.72.

The Raiders will split up for a pair of meets on Saturday (Feb. 6). A number of distance runners will stay for the second day of the Giegengack Invitational, while the rest of the team will compete at the Syracuse Invitational.
