Men Shatter 29-Year-Old Record

Senior Kevin Kearney
New York, NY – Early reports from the first day of the 2010 New Balance Collegiate Invitational show that four members of the Wagner Men's Indoor Track and Field team set a new school record in the Distance Medley Relay – a mark that stood since 1981.

Four Seahawks, senior James Johnston (Middle Island, NY/Longwood), junior Derek Schultz (Ocean Port, NJ/Shore Regional), senior Kevin Kearney (Haddonfield, NJ/St. Joe's Prep), and sophomore Thomas Iannacone (Havertown, PA/St. Joe's Prep) etched their names in the Wagner College record book with a 10:13.64 finish in the Distance Medley Relay. The time is nearly seven seconds better than the previous mark of 10:20.09 set 29 years ago.

Johnston led the way with a 3:07.6 run in the opening leg of the race - the 1200 meter run. Schultz followed with a 50.4 second run in the 400 meter dash. Kearney completed the third leg of the race, the 800 meter run, in 1:56.0 and Iannacone closed out the race with a 4:18.6 finish in the 1600 meter run. The team finished second in the heat.

Schultz's previous season-best in the 400 meter dash was 51.72 seconds. Kearney also improved his season-best 800 meter dash by shaving one second off his time.

More information will be posted when results become available tomorrow night.
