Orange to Host Annual SU Invite

2/4/2010 10:25:23 PM | Track and Field

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - For the first time in the 2010 indoor season, the Syracuse University track and field team will be divided between two meets during the same weekend. Most of the team will be staying in Syracuse this weekend, as the Orange will host the SU Invitational at Manley Field House on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5-6. A small squad will travel to the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York, N.Y.

Syracuse's second of two home events this season is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday with the heptathlon and pentathlon events. Saturday's competition will commence at 10:00 a.m. with the men's high jump. At the Armory, the New Balance Invite will kick off with the men's 60-meter hurdles at 11:50 a.m. on Friday.

At the Syracuse Invite, the men's team will have its most entries in the one mile run, expecting to have eight runners competing. Senior Jeff Scull and junior Michael Brocks will look to lead a rather young field of Orange runners. Scull earned the first-place seed for his team in this competition with a time of 4:11.00, while Brocks took third (4:20.15) in the one mile event at the SU Welcome Back in January. Three sophomores and three freshmen will also represent the Orange, including Steve Murdock, who was the 3,000-meter champion of the Welcome Back.

As for the shorter events, junior Evan Stivala will represent the Orange in the 55-meter hurdles. Stivala led the SU men at the Upstate Challenge, taking home the only crown for his team in the men's heptathlon high jump with a mark of 1.93m.

Senior veteran Bernard Bush will look to standout in both the long jump and triple jump events, while fellow senior Jon Buice will take part in the heptathlon.

On the women's side, SU will enter six runners in the 3,000-meter race. Senior Lynne Mundy, who placed third in the same event at the Cornell Relays in December, and junior Cassie White, who finished 19th in the 5,000-meter at the Terrier Invite last weekend, will look to lead the squad. Graduate student Beth Long will compete in the 400-meter dash.

Freshman Aubree Mercure will compete in both the long jump and triple jump. At the Upstate Challenge, Mercure placed sixth in the long jump, as well as eighth in the triple jump. Junior Leah Testa will be one of three jumpers competing for the Orange women in the pole vault, while Uhunoma Osazuwa looks to take home the crown in the high jump. Kelsey Rubeor, Priscilla Ilarraza, and Erica Belanger will all represent SU in the pentathlon.

Meanwhile, a squad of 13 will travel to the New Balance Invite. Sophomore Matthew Callanan and freshman Amadou Gueye will represent the Orange in the men's 60-meter hurdles, while freshman Charma Harris will run the women's 60-meter dash. Junior football team member Da'Mon Merkerson and freshman Tyler McCully will compete in the men's 400-meter dash.

Lareea Chisholm is the women's entry for the 200-meter dash, while junior Sham Lewis and graduate student Antoine Clark will represent the men. Veterans Jarret Eaton and Flings Owusu-Agyapong will also be competing for SU at the New Balance Invite.
