Johnston and Hart Named January Student Athletes of the Month

Seniors James Johnston (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) and Jessica Hart (Montreal, Canada/Northwest) were named Wagner College Student Athletes of the Month for the month of January.

James Johnston - Men's Indoor Track & Field
Johnson kicked off the year with a record-breaking time in the 1000 meter run. Johnston, a senior, knocked nearly three seconds off his season-best time in the event with a 2:31.34 finish. He took eighth overall in the event while breaking Wagner College's Anthony Canova's nine-year old record time of 2:31.44 set in 2001. In addition to holding the top-spot in the 1000 meter run, Johnston owns the team's second-fastest mile run (4:27.10) and contributed to team-best finishes in the 4x800 meter relay (8:32.47), the 4x1600 meter relay (3:40.77) and the distance medley (10:38.46).

Jessica Hart - Women's Swimming
Last month, the senior standout garnered five first-place finishes and broke two Wagner College pool records. Hart started the month with a first-place finish in the 200 meter butterfly against Mount Saint Mary's (1/17), before picking up a pair of first-place finishes against the University of Rhode Island (1/23). Her time of 2:06.45 in the 200 butterfly marked her first pool record of the month and she also took first in the 100 butterfly with her time of 57.56. Against CCSU (1/30/10), the butterfly specialist notched two more first-place finishes. Along with her wins, she set her second pool record of the month in the 100 butterfly, touching in at 56.67. Her second first-place mark of the competition came in the 50 freestyle, clocking in at 24.70.

For the season, Hart holds the top-times in the Northeast Conference (NEC) in the 100 butterfly (56.67) and 200 butterfly (2:06.45). Follow Hart and the Seahawks, February 11th-13th as the Green & White travel to Yale University to compete in the NEC Championships. Last year, Wagner finished in second-place, falling short to CCSU by only 17 points.
